I just purchased a 2000 DII. While driving at low speeds (30 to 45 mph)in Manual Mode, when I touch the gas I hear a Ka-Klunk sound coming from the drivetrain. When I drive in Sport Mode, I don't hear this sound.

After talking to a friend with a 99 DII, he said his does the same thing. He said it was the gears in the transfer case re-aligning. I would like to have a second opinion from you guys. Thanks

it should only go into manual mode in low range.. are you really hitting 45 in low??

what do you mean it should only go in low range?

he's talking about that little "sport" button, not the manual low/high.

anyways, are you terry talking about if your coasting, and you tap the gas, it makes a noise as if the drive train was almost moving a little? I know that didn't make a lot of sense, but i think what your describing is literally the sound of the pplay in the engine/ mounts, where they mount to the body. My 2k DII makes the same noise, and I think "sport" doesn't because of how the gears are engaging, i think at least.

if it is indeed that, then I don't think it to be an issue, unless you are doing it constantly, like my freind did with his audi, he eventually broke one of the mounts entirely.

yeah...gil is right,

in high range (small shifter in front of the main gear selector), the options for the button on the main gear selector should be "normal" mode (no lights on dash) and "sport" mode ("s" inside gear looking icon). in low range (small shifter in front), there is a "manual" mode, but 45mph is not a low speed in that selection. can you give more info about the positions of your shifters...?

jesse,

there is a "manual" mode connected to the "sport" button...when you are in low range with the transfer case the "sport" button activates a "manual" program for the transmission. it holds the selected gear until you decide you want a different one. also, since there are so many moving parts meshed in a full time 4wd system, many times that "thunk" is just driveline lash winding and unwinding. parts catching up with each other...

The small shifter is "H" and the large shifter is in "D". The thunk only happens when I am coasting and then hit the gas.

Does this put any unneeded stress on the U-Joints ?

i think it is just all the bits, gears, and pieces catching up with each other...a certain amount is normal (i have had it in a variety of all and four wheel drive vehicles). if it seems TOO excessive, either hook up with your local rover club and see how theirs sound, or drop by your dealer...mine does it, but not everytime...but i try not to do a lot of coast/floor it/coast/floor it driving...it is better on everything to accelerate smoothly...

Think about all those splines and gears that make up all time 4 wheel drive meeting and getting power from one place. There has to be a margin of play to keep things from ripping apart. When you speed up or slow down, you change the momentum causing almost a "delay" between these-making the clunk sound. If you get constant vibration in the drivetrain while driving, then I would worry. My .02

I'm not sure why it doesn't do it in "Sport Mode". We'll have to compare sometime. Welcome!

sport mode changes shift points for a more "sporty" feel to the truck...where as the normal mode may shift to a higher gear to allow better gas economy while coasting (and allowing lash into the drivetrain) the sport mode may hold that lower gear for a quicker pedal response (but the resistance of being in that lower gear keeps lash out of the system).
