Hello all, I posted recently about my trans. temp light coming on so I ordered another temp switch. I noticed that this switch looks to be different from the original but it has the 2 prongs and same threads to fit, so I installed it. My question is, when the ignition is switched on (engine not running), is the trans temp light supposed to illuminate? Because mine doesnt. Thanks for any help. |

Can't remember what year you have, but on our 95, it illuminates with all the other warning lights for a few seconds when you first turn the key on. Check your owners manual; it will tell you which lights are supposed to do the self test at startup. |

I bet the one you got is the one in front of the power steering fluid tank. Is that where you put it? If not put it there and it will fix the light. Yes, the light should come on when you turn the key. |

Ok, thanks for the responses. to clear up, it's a 95 Disco. The light on mine doesnt illuminate at all and yes, it was from in front of the steering box. However, I put the old one back in and it didnt illuminate either. I'm sure it will come on tomorrow morning as I drive to work, though. |

yes...if it stays on there is a bad sensor on the cooler hose more than likely that needs replacement. as all sensors 80-100.00 |

Will, thanks for checking. My light doesnt come on with the ignition on, engine off, so I guess something's wrong. I have that "newer" temp switch. |

On my 95, the trans light never comes on when switching the ignition on. And I know it works since it came on one day and I had to replace the sensor (the one on the left side of the transmission under the car). I believe we are talking about the same light, a red one that looks like a gear with a thermometer in the center. What sensor exactly is in front of the steering fluid tank? My 2 cts, Lionel |

Thank you Mr. Cheese, this thread has gone on much too long. I feel a lot better now. The sensor thats up front is for the trans. temp. Its in front of the steering box, and just behind the radiator. But I guess there are two? Or maybe you replaced the transfer case temp. switch. I dunno. |

Yep, my mistake, the sensor I replaced was the transfer case (I do remember now...). Thanks for posting your progress. Helpful to other members! Lionel |

The haynes manual shows the transmission temp switch and the transfer box temp switch as being in parallel, so that if either one of the switches grounds, the trans temp light will illuminate. Thanks for letting me know about the light being off on ignition. |
