Yes, you need to put lube in the swivels MOST DEFINITELY. The reasoning behind the no level or no drain plug is that LR switched over to grease, but still yet, it is beyond me. If possible you could disassemble the swivel, and tap out a drain plug. However, at the minimum, try and replenish that swivel grease.. your cv's will love ya for it..Later..RS

PS, you can buy the grease at the dealer, or from Nathan at http://www.discountrovers.com

Or you can go to autozone and ask for cv grease and get the same stuff.

As per the rave CD, it is either 80 or 90 wt and it also states the following.

CHECK/TOP UP SWIVEL PIN HOUSING OIL
RENEW SWIVEL PIN HOUSING OIL
1. Site vehicle on lift or level ground. Place
container under swivel to be drained.
2. Remove drain and level plugs, allow oil to drain completely, clean and refit drain plug.
3. Remove filler plug and inject recommended
make and grade of oil it reaches level hole.
4. Clean and refit level and filler plugs, wipe away any surplus oil.

The Disco I came with 90wt in the swivel pin housings, but LR now recommends a light grease.

I'm going to do the 60k maint on my wife's 97 disco, and I ordered the stuff from AB. They sent me LR branded swivel pin grease. It comes in two plastic bags, you just cut the tip and squeeze the grease into the swivel pin housing. It also comes with stickers indicating that the swivel pin has been changed to grease (so the next guy doesn't freak when the opens the drain plug and nothing comes out!)

That makes sense. What year did they switch from the oil to a grease?

Jaime,

is the swivel pin grease what you use to fill your swivel housings?

ok. i just have some vibrations from the front of the car. im trying to find the source of it process of elimination. cvs are second now. i opebed the fill plug and noticed that it was very dry looking in there. looks like maybe a little dirt too. guessing im goin to have to pull the whole lot apart. im in oz so i dont know where to get this grease from the dealer in our town is a real dodgy bastard. i would buy anything from them..am i better off with grease? or oil? grease sounds easier to put in. but oil would be easier to change..

You can buy the grease from any LR dealer in a tube, one tube per side. LR switched to grease mainly because it dosent leak out as easy. I prefer to run oil because if you get water in the hubs from creek crossings it's easy to flush purge and refill. If you use grease it's harder to clean out. I run Penrite 90/140.

I just drined and refilled with the LR One Shot grease from Atlantic British. It was an easy replacement and will stop a slightly leaking seal. It took all of 30 minutes to do both sides.

I run 85-140 Valvoline gear oil in all diffs & swivs. Easy to change (unless the geniuses didn't equip you with a drain plug). Grease is indeed less likely to leak pass less-than-perfect seals, though...
