Well, I finally got it yesterday. My first impression is that this thing is way overbiult. You can look at it and tell that it is heavy duty. Its heavy, the tubing is think and the welds look stronger than the tubing. The feet that hold the rack to the gutter are some thick steel plate.

The only thing about it that is less than perfect is the finish and this is no big deal. As I got it from NWP the rack has only a coat of flat black paint. The paint dosent really cover up much of the tooling marks. You can tell where the welds have been ground down. Some of the imperfections in the material is also evident. Again this is not a big deal. This weekend I am going to take the rack off the truck and coat it in a nice thick layer of spray on bedliner. This should cover up most of what I mentioned.

Another complaint is that the thing is really noisy. I didnt think it was going to be so bad. I'm gonna put some hella 500's up there and see what that does.

Over all I am really happy with it. For $500 it is a great deal. RECOMMENDED!

Hey Dan:

Mind posting some pictures of your new rack on your rover and or closeups? The pictures on their website aren't very good and don't showcase it on any vehicle. I'm in the martket for a rack and this price looks good. The only burning question remaining is whether or not it'll fit in my garage with the added height. ;)

Dan-
How long did it take for you to get your rack. I heard there was a waiting list of about 7-8 people.

Matt, the design of the rack is exactly like the genuine adventure rack except for the feet. I dont have a digital camera so I cant do pictures. Someone should email NWP and have them post a bunch of good pics. I'll try and remember to measure home high the rack stick off the roof.

John, I've been waiting for my rack long before NWP started making these. I beleive mine is one of the very first ones. NWP is local to me so I was able to pick mine up. It was definetly worth the wait. For the price of one of those cheap garvin wilderness racks that AB sells I got a nice solid hunk of steel rack that looks way better too. Let NWP know that you want one. Now that they got the setup done they should start cranking these things out in no time.

I have one on order and was told it would take 2 weeks and then another week to ship via forward air...it's been 2 weeks so hopefully production is streamlined a little!

Dan, how many light tabs are on it? and did it come ready to mount...just slap it on top and go??

Sean, there are 4 light tabs on the front and one on the back. You can have NWP add more if you like. I wish I would have told them to add a second tab on the back. Yes it was ready to mount. Just put it on the roof and secure it to the gutter with the 8 feet, 2 bolts each. Should be pretty easy to get on and off other than the fact that you have to undo 16 bolts.

Matt, the top of the rack is exactly 8 1/4 inches off the roof, hope that helps.

Damnit Blue, I'm trying to get pics! You wanna stop yourself and your digital camera by my house to do it for me? The camera is in L.A. with my little brother right now. When the camera comes back i will get pics but by then the rack will probably be coated in bedliner and the welds wont be as visible.

Trust me, the rack is real, its sittin on my truck and lookin good. I climbed up on it yesterday just to get a feel for how sturdy it is. It's solid, no flex whatsoever. After doing the balancing act I realize I need flooring. Maybe I should start a flooring thread and see what people sugjest. I dont beleive that has been discussed before. :-)

Dan:

Thanks for the Info. Alas, it's too high to get into my garage. BUT.... If the install isn't too much of a hassle I can always take it off when I don't need it (rubbing hands).

I'd still be interested in those pics regardless of bedliner coating when you get the camera back.

Cheers,

Matthew

Blue,

You either have a low rider Disco or a garage that is the envy of we lowly tract home owners with 7' doors...

That's the view out my office window of my standard-issue AZ covered parking spot. It won't fit in my 1961 Holcraft 16x7' garage door...I only had about 1" clearance over the stock roof rails before I removed them.

Have you stood on it yet? Does it sag on to the roof?

I'd never stand on my coonskin cap. What's the matter with you?

:-)

That rack isn't saggin anywhere. That's not the NW parts rack - it's a Land Rover Adventure Rack (XD version). Courtesy of one Jess Alvarez....

Chris, my rack does not sag when I stand on it either, mine is the NWP rack. There is no flex in it at all when I stand on it. I was actually surprised at how solid it is.

Very nice rack, but I wonder whether it will fit on top of the factory mounted roof rails. And what about the sunroofs?

roland
with the aventure rack from the XD models, you have no sunroof access and no roofrails. The xd didnt come with either I beleive, so if you have them, you can open the sunroof and you have to remove the roof rails.

looks good though!

yeah, to fit the XD you have to remove stock roof rails - I'll write up a quick tech article for stock roof rail removal. Also, sunroofs won't open, but if you're unfortunate enough to have sunroofs on your Disco, chances are they won't open anyway....

Is the XD rack just a low profile safety devices rack?? Or is it a seperate genuine rover part??

I'm thinking about cutting in aftermarket sunroofs with simple pop-out glass. The last thing I want is more Rover electronics & rattles...

I'm with Blue, rattling, whistling sun roofs were the bane of my existence but I recently reached my tolerance threshold and replaced the rail kits and posted the how-to in the Tech Section.
Sunroof sufferers need suffer no longer, replace those rails! It's actually pretty easy and can be finished in 6 beers!

Rover Accessories sells a low profile adventure roof rack very similar to what Blue has. Can only be installed if the roof rails are removed. They're more meant for SD trucks that have no sunroofs but if your sunroofs don't work anyway, won't make much of a difference. Just be aware that you will not be able to use the sunroofs anymore if you buy this rack. I think they sell them for $1090. I like the low profile look, looks pretty nice.

Blue what do you do about the holes in the roof after you remove the roof rails?

To remove the stock roof rails you have to remove the interior headliner to have access to the bolts...then you'll need something to plug the holes with so it doesn't leak. At least this is what I think would need to be done based on my current headliner replacement experience...

hole1

I now have 4 mini-sunroofs :-)

I have to pick up the right sized rubber plugs for those holes. Not too worried about leaks (it's sunny & 112 degrees out here right now). One bonus is that I now have a perfect wiring route through the roof.

I met a guy one time who had the XD rack on his rig and he had removed the luggage rails. On his he had plates made to cover the outside, they were rectangular and made a rubber gasket to go between body and plate, it was a really nice look. I am considering painting my disco soon and will be making some plates so i can take off my rails for good. My guess is it looks like it would require welding a bolt to the bottom of the plate?

Dan-

I can show you the "cage" I put on my rack to allow me to walk and place things up their a lot easier and if you like it I can get you the left over I still have for like $10. Getting some supplement to the rack flooring is worth it. Your profile says you are in insurance - I could drive by your office some day this week if you would like. Remember, don't try to park in any downtown garages anymore!

I've been thinking about the flooring ever since I got this thing. I would like to see what you did.
