I just recently started experiencing problems with my idle when I start the car, I am wondering if my IAC is going bad, can anyone give me some input? Problem is the car starts just fine but right after I change it into gear the car almost shuts off, the idle goes way low and then it pick right back up, after the car is warm up everything is fine. I think it might be the IAC but I am not sure.

What year? What maintenance done? Any codes tripped on Computer? That is what happened to mine, but it is an expensive part to replace.

It's a 95, I've done all the required maintenance that I can think off. I don't know if there are any codes on the Computer, there are no Engine lights that come on but the problem just started though. I want to fix it before it gets worst. Thanks for any input!!!!

Check your vacuum lines and see if that helps. What happens if you unplug your IAC? Its not a cheap part, but it will fix a lot of things. How is your vaccuum advance? I would start with checking those things and you will probably find the problem. Also what if it just idles for a while? What does it do on startup, does it idle way up then come down or something else?

Same thing happened when my IAC went bad. I had to tap the gas in order to keep the truck running at start up. FYI it is a cheap part ($29-$49); aftermarket or AC Delco is readily available for a 95. Check the archives for part numbers. There have been a ton of posts w/ info about this.

I would go genuine, but it is your gamble. Read other active posts going on now about the subject of aftermarket vs. geuine.

I have not checked what happens if I unplug my IAC but I will try this later on. My idle runs great right now once the car is warm up, it only has problems right after I start it, it idles high, then it comes down to where it should be and then all the sudden it drops to zero and the car seems like its about to stall but it quickly picks back up to normal. A tap on the accelerator fixies it!!!! I will chekc on a cheap aftermarket IAC part, if that fixes it then I will go with the geuine.

It sounds like IAC, true but if you go to autozone they will cross reference the expensive one also. I tried the $25 dollar fix and it didn't work for me

Jones:
I recently spoke with a gentleman who got two bad ones back to back so it is not completely unheard of.

The code is coming on not necessarily because of a bad IAC valve, there may be other things taking place that the computer recognizes as being a bad IAC. Depending upon mileage, etc. it may be advisable to check air gap and base idle, along with engine timing and temp sensors, both fuel and coolant.

Air Gap? what is that and how do you check it?? I have also got my timing done and it was really far off, how easily does the timing go out? Also does anyone have part numbers for the IAC, Ive check with some online dealers and they have them available, but my local parts stores say they can't get their hands on them!!!! Thanks

No codes at all, I went through all the things suggested above, plugs, stepper (cleaned no replaced) improved a little but didn't fix. I even replaced VSS, nothing worked, finally after talking to Paul a little ended up buying a TPS. Its like a new truck.
