I took a short 2 hour drive and stopped at a gas station to get something to drink. I come back out to my friends '95 DI and he cranked it up. We were set to go but it refused to go into gear. Called the dealer and he asked if the brake lights worked and i took a look and they did not work. He came to the conclusion that a brake switch was the answer. I ran out to a local dealer and bought a "brake switch" and replaced it. I pulled up the white sleeve like i was told, plugged it where the old one came out. Cranked the Disco up and still refused to go into gear. Both tail lights are still dead. Is there anything else that i have to do? It clicks like it is supposed to when i tap the brake. He said all DI brake switches are the exact same through all years. I need help fast so we can get his vehicle moved. Please help!!!!!!!!! You are welecome to email at [email protected] |

I just had my brake switch go, and the dealer tech told me to check three things: the switch itself (you can short it out to fool the brains of the truck into thinking you are putting your foot on the brake and then shift it out of park), a fuse for the rear window defroster may be shot, or the circlip on the shifter may have dislodged (you have to pop the top off the shifter to see if it has popped off). Mine went right in front of my mailbox when I was facing the wrong way on the street. A two inch piece of wire (and a 12v DC tester) enabled me to short the brake circuit while the truck was running to get it out of park. Saved a tow, and only cost the price of the switch to fix. |

I had a similar problem on my RRC 92, was a dirty fuse simply pulled it and pushed it back and it worked fine. |

Check your fuses. On my 97 it is a 15 fuse bottom right. |

Aren't there two 'brake switches'? One controls the brake lights (and Park lockout) and the other kills the cruise control when you tap the brakes. Did Garrett replace the correct one? If the one you replaced had a vacuum hose on it, I think it was the wrong one. Jim |

Jim: By his description of pulling the collar out to remove/replace, he probably has the right one. What I believe happened is that when he put the new switch in, he did not gently pull the plunger out so that it will contact the brake pedal lever. The switch is somewhat self-adjusting in that you can pull the plunger out to different lengths and if it is not pulled out far enough, it cannot contact the brake pedal lever and actuate the switch. |

I concur with Paul. This happened to me about 2 months ago. Stressful. If the switch is working the brake lights should cycle as you press and release the switch. IF it's working, THEN install it to the proper length. If not you have bigger problems. Nash |
