Hello, I'm seeking help in sourcing an oversize replacement cylinder liner sleeve for my 4.0. The engine " dropped " a sleeve and I want to machine a replacement sleeve to create a " top hat " style liner to press fit into the block. Has anyone ever done this and where did you purchase the oversize sleeve ? E-mail me with any information, [email protected]. Thanks in advance, Bill |

Bill contact Trevor Griffiths at TMS - he just did this on a 4.6 for his own ride using a block that had dropped a liner. He also went oversize and had the liner fit with more than just a friction fit. His number is 410-833-2329 if you are interested. Bill |

Wow! I can hardly believe this could be done that easily. I know diesles are commonly resleeved, but didn't expect it with a Rover engine.

The main issue with relinered blocks is that the same abuse that caused one liner to drop probably effected the other liners. If its a 4.6 then it might be worth it, on a 4.0 when you can have a new one on your doorstep friday for $1200, I don't think it makes sense. Ron |

You can buy the stepped top hat liners in Australia the most engine shops have them particulaly those that work on Jag engines. I suspect ACL make them. |

The new bosch blocks are not hand balanced like the old Gems blocks on 94-99 rovers. The new rovers with the bosch system have a new way of smoothing out the roughness that LR knows is there; the new blocks are not built to exacting standards. Plus the genuine LR replacement Gems block used to cost $6000, and now they are $1200, so the cost of making them is a lot cheaper; explaining their roughness. The evidence is in my discovery. I had Robison service replace my block with the genuine LR bosch block and it is very rough. They have toiled over it for a long time, but believe that the original block was balanced better. There are no misfires and the timing is right, but the engine shakes a lot around 1400 rpm. Also, I have a 5 speed which is a much lighter transmission than the automatic, and therefore absorbs less of the engines roughness and I feel more of it. All of the engines that Robison has replaced with the bosch block are rougher than before and he knows that it is the block. I am trying to have land rover buy their bosch block back so I can put an aftermarket or rebuilt gems block in. I also may have the new block balanced. The $1200 short block is not the deal it seems to be because they are bosch blocks made for new rovers and just modified to fit ours. I wish that I went with an aftermarket block from DAP for $2500. Thanks everyone for the imput and opinions. I found an oversize sleeve for $ 43.75 + shipping ! Quite a difference and the machine shop told me everything else is tight - so while the 4.0 is out we are re-ringing and new bearings - plus the liner work. Still going to be a whole lot less than a new " Rough ? " short block. Plus it's good theraphy. Cheers, Bill
