Yes it is awesome i think. I have it now and it was one of the best investments I have made. I don't think there is anything I dislike about it, the only thing is that is takes awhile to get used to. But once you have it is simple to you. I would look at getting a different mount other then the bean-bag. When it gets hot outside (like it is in indy) it does not hold as well.

Joshua,

I agree, Street Pilot III is awesome and well worth the price, especially with the $100 rebate that is currently available. MAKE SURE that you purchase the "DELUXE" package, because it has all software, large memory chip, and every necessary adapter for use with computer, vehicles, desktop mount, and bean bag mount for in vehicles. You can find the deluxe package for about the same price. I purchased mine for $699 including rebate.

Last week, I purchased a portable AC to 12VDC power supply for about $4 at Radio Shack so that I can "plug it in" at my desk when uploading/downloading data to/from my computer (there may have been a better way to do this, but it works for me!). The street pilot eats through batteries quickly, and they are not as easy to change as they are on handheld units.

It does take a while to get used to. As with all Garmin products, feature instructions are not exactly easy to follow - but, IMHO, all Garmin products are well worth the time they take to master their operation. I still have not taken the time to figure out all the features on mine.

I love the voice feature which gives verbal turn by turn instructions, and gives notification of upcoming turns well in advance. There is also an easily accessible button to push that will repeat the last instruction or the last bearing info.

I purchased it because I have been unable to overcome my ridiculous habit of taking "shortcuts", which I think are great ideas, then get very lost. I am in process of training myself to do what the street pilot tells me to do. Although I still ignore it most of the time, it brought me through big thunderstorm at night in very congested unfamiliar territory last week and worked great!

I am trying to figure out the best way to permanently mount in D2 for max safety off road, so that I do not injure myself with it! I would also like to hard wire it, so that I have the option of leaving it on while rover is not running. Has anyone done this yet in Disco? Would appreciate input from anyone who has.

Thanks! Jamie

Yes, I 'hard wired' my StreetPilot. Bought a data / power cable Ebay for $15 or so (the round plug on one end and bare wires on the other). Ran the cable across the dash and down between dash & door frame on drivers side, then hooked to the constant hot (brown? I forget now, but could take a look) ignition wire. Works perfectly. I move the StreetPilot between vehicles, but use the permanent mount in the D2. Really wish I used the Garmin 176C in the Rover and the StreetPilot in all my 'road' cars, as the 176 has a 'backtrack' feature the StreetPilot is missing.

If you want the GPS for offroading only, I'd recommend the 176C. Otherwise the StreetPilot is tits for everyday navigation. Just remember to use 'fastest route' instead of 'shortest route', or you'll wind up on some nasty streets in various cities.

Regarding ebay purchase: the form that you fill out for the $100 rebate states: REBATE COUPONS ARE NOT VALID FOR PURCHASES MADE AT ONLINE AUCTIONS

Also on form, it states that rebate is available April 6 - July 6, 2003. So, you've only got a few days left to purchase to get the rebate back. Form for rebate must be postmarked by August 6.

FYI, I purchased mine from Bob Baker at Cellular Unlimited in Lakeland FL (phone 863-647-2910). He sent it to me UPS overnight delivery for VERY minimal charge. He also prepared the rebate for me by copying receipt, filling out the form for me, and cutting UPC from box, so all I had to do was drop it in the mailbox. Now, that sure is customer service!! I was told that he usually has 3-4 new on hand, and occassionaly gets in slightly used products at much lower prices.

Another rover owner referred me to him, I think he carries the full Garmin line? His prices were half of what the retail stores charged for the same unit in my area.

Hope this helps. Good Luck! Jamie

I passed on the Land Rover radio/gps upgrade and bought a Street Pilot III Deluxe as well. VERY COOL! Works like charm. The auto rerouting makes things even easier.

This was the other unit that I was considering. After all the pros and cons between the two. I made the right choice IMHO. =)
