I recently purchased a 96 Disco with 74,000 miles on it and the engine makes a tapping click noise when I give it gas but not when it it parked and ideling. My thought is the it may have somthing to do with the exaust but I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this. | ||

Sounds like pinging to me, aka pre-ignition. Try filling it up with premium gas as see if it goes away. Also check that your timing isn't too advanced. Premium is about .20 more per gallon, that's about $4 per tank full - the best insurance you can buy. By the way, pinging is NOT just a nuisance, it'll knock big, smoking holes in your pistons if you keep pushing it. -Jim | ||

This might sound dumb but check your oil or have you done a change lately?? My Disco gives me little taps when she wants some fresh fluids... | ||

My disco has an exaust leak btwn the manifold and down pipe on the drivers side, it has had this leak for 45k miles, each inspection i replace the gasket and no leak for a while, i landed on the cats a couple of times off road so my y pipe is most likely bent, yours just leaks under load and not at idel, try and snug the 3 bolts on the leaking side, and look for a bit of carbon around all connections, that is where your leak is.
