I recently purchased a 96 Disco with 74,000 miles on it and the engine makes a tapping click noise when I give it gas but not when it it parked and ideling. My thought is the it may have somthing to do with the exaust but I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Sounds like pinging to me, aka pre-ignition.
Try filling it up with premium gas as see if it goes away. Also check that your timing isn't too advanced.
Premium is about .20 more per gallon, that's about $4 per tank full - the best insurance you can buy.
By the way, pinging is NOT just a nuisance, it'll knock big, smoking holes in your pistons if you keep pushing it.

This might sound dumb but check your oil or have you done a change lately?? My Disco gives me little taps when she wants some fresh fluids...

My disco has an exaust leak btwn the manifold and down pipe on the drivers side, it has had this leak for 45k miles, each inspection i replace the gasket and no leak for a while, i landed on the cats a couple of times off road so my y pipe is most likely bent, yours just leaks under load and not at idel, try and snug the 3 bolts on the leaking side, and look for a bit of carbon around all connections, that is where your leak is.
