I have the Roc N gate. its the swing away bike rack that holds four bikes. It on the $$ side which explains why I have no lift. I have got about 500 miles on it and I like it alot. no wobble or anything it sits the bikes up high enough that I guess you could do some offroad but it does kill your departure angle. I have had 3 XC bikes on it before it has max capacity of 4, I assumue it could handle some of the bigger DH FR bikes but I dont know. I had to have the swing away option to clear my rear door and it will do that just fine. I have a 265/75/16 tire on the back of my truck and it does touch it but when you get it loaded down with bikes it pulls away a little. tire clearance may be a concern if you are running big tires. I say go with the ROC-N-GATE if you budget will allow. good luck with your purchase

I have the Yakima SpareRoc (mounts to spare tire). Best rack I've ever used.

I doubt the weight of my bike will hurt my rear door.

Not the door, but, it does leverage on the hinges....

I have a Yakima Terrafirma, which is similar to the Roc-n-Gate, but it doesn't swing away.... was half as much, too.... I figured that I didn't leave the rack on the truck all the time, that I could deal with not opening the back door while I've got bikes with me.....

Hey, it works for me....

steve
it has been said, that even after a while, the stock tire will have enough weight for the hinges to sag just enough to throw evverything off a bit. Its quite common to see dweb posts regarding rear door alignment.

a few bikes might be ok now, i think what "we" were saying is that if you are looking to purchase something for your truck, there might be a better alternative than the tire mount, just to avoid a potencial problem down the road.

I went with a performance bike rack, that was well made, hitch mount and under 80 bucks shipped. its not as sexy as the yakima, but works exactly the same.

and no worries about the rear door and weight

FWIW

I still don't think that the weight of my bike mounted on the spare tire on an occasional basis will cause any long-term harm to my rear door. When the door is closed it is supported at the latch as well as the hinges, so all the weight is not concentrated just at the hinge area. If this was a permanent attachement to my rear door then yes I would be concerned. However, my bike and rack are only on my Disco long enough to get to and from the trailhead. And I try to remove the bike from the rack before I open my back door to get to any items I might need when I'm riding. I chose this rack for two specific reasons. First, I have used Yakima racks for years and feel they are the best on the market. Second, I wanted to be able to pull a camper and haul my bikes at the same time. This rack is perfect for that.
