Guys,

Sorry if I'm being redundant, but I couldn't find this in the archives.

My transfer case is leaking out the back so badly that I can't even use the hand brake because it is so coated in oil! I have to put in a pint every two weeks to keep it full.

I saw the front bearing replacement in the tech section. Can the rear be done in the same manner? OR is this something that will make a hole in my pocket? :-(

Matthew G

PS: I know- just drain out the oil and I won't have to worry about leaks, right? ;)

If its that bad its time to pull it,put it on a bench and rebuild the offending bits

Matthew - you can R&R the rear output seal the same way as the front - you just have to remove more stuff to get to it.

Remove DS
Remove brakedrum
Remove output flange

Check bearing - replace if necessary
R&R oil seal
R&R felt washer in output flange

try this before doing anything drastic like removing Tcase. If all else functions as normal - just fix the leaks.

After going through nearly 80 pages of archives, I found the tip about checking the breather tubes and sensor on top of the transfer case. I'm going to try that next. If not, I guess I'll be getting very, very dirty and greasy.

Matt, where is this in the archives about the breather tube? I also have a leak I need to check on.
