Does anyone know if theres possible short or something that could lead to busting of an alternator 3 times in like 1.5 years?! The first one stop cranking out electricity, the second one the regulator blew (putting out ~22 Volts) and made my battries all bubblely (boiling), and this last one just died and dont crank any electricity (like the first). Anyone with any pointer? Thanks a bunch.

Are you buying rebuilts? Go with a new MeanGreen and your alternator problems should go away. I replaced mine twice within months of eachother, then decided that the lifetime warranty didnt' mean a whole lot when you had to swap the thing out every 10k miles.. One thing I wasn't a cheap bastard about.. go Mean Green..

hows your fusebox from the alternator?? Didja bypass it? It sounds like you need a good rebuilder, not going to Pep Boys are ya? I would run a check of all your electrical, see if you have a feed back somewhere. You can do this with a very sensetive test light. Hook it to the neg terminal on you bat. then start poking around, if you get a light on a piece of the body that should be grounded then you know the problem is in your wiring and not the alternator.

sounds like the checker starters my dad used years ago. They went out about every two-four months. If you still have the same battery that was bubbling, you might want to replace it too.

DO NOT BUY REBUILDS!!!!!!!

I went through 5 in a year. The last one caught on fire. Lickilly I was able to put it out before any damage was done.

Put a new one in, and have had no problems for the past 2 years.

I just put in the 2nd rebuilt alternator in 6 weeks (spent a lovely two hours waiting for a tow truck in 112 degree heat).
The Mean Green alternators seem to be pretty highly recommended on this board but I'm a little concerned that the factory serpentine belt can't be used after installing these units.
If Mean Green alternators are available for the Discovery, why do they require a different sized belt? Is the pulley a different size? Can the factory pulley be transplanted onto a Mean Green?

Jim,
You're correct on the pulley situation there, that is why the different size. As far as using the old pulley, I'm not so sure on that one. I would think that since it is smaller it would be spinning the new Mean Green into a firey oblivion. The new belt is no big deal except you can't find one exactly the right size. It's either 1" too small, or 6" too big. I obviously went the 1" too small route, and it was a fun task putting that bad boy on there..any more questions.. feel free to ask me.

Oh, and if anyone here does go Mean Green, plan ahead to trim your fan shroud and remove the insulation under the hood.. spinning blades of the alternator rubbed on my insulation so I yanked it.. Later.. RS
