Well my work is cleaning out it's storage unit so we can move soon to a new building. In there were 3 265/75/16 Rover RT dunlops in brand new condition. Also there are in the same size 2 Cooper discoverer S/T's in brand new condition. I can buy all 5 tries for $50. My question is if they measure out to be the same size, width and height not mounted, (I actually measure with of tread, width of beads, bead to top of tread, bead to bead) would it effect anything? I don't care about having matching tires for looks, I care about performance. Plus being that my wife is in graduate school this is really the only way I can get a better tire than what I have now. I am running 245/70/16 goodyear wrangler AP's, and while a fair street tire they leave a lot to desired offroad. By the way I have a lift and plan on cutting away the rear fender. I'm just a poor bastard hoping this deal could work out. Thanks

Heres the tires;

I think that is fine. I think the problem is when you have 2 different tires with different treads life left. Don't think you should have a problem

they have to be the same size, for sure...i would AT LEAST run matched pairs on each axel (one of the RTs as the spare). why not buy another RT and then you will have 4 on the ground, matched, and still be way ahead on the price of 4 or 5 new tires? run a cooper as a spare and sell one of the others to a used tire place to defray the cost of the new RT you buy.

but...is this where i put in a huge disclaimer for following my advice...?

;)

Buy them, if they are the same size I don't see why not, redneck or not who cares, probably not going to notice it, just make sure you have blackwalls out if they have white letters, or you could just buy one Dunlop RT and use the others as spares.

You want to aviod a difference in overall height (circumference). While I don't have an exact number for how far you can go, the idea is that a difference in diameter will cause problems with the viscous coupler trying to run one axle faster than another.

235/85/16

Cooper: diameter 31.9", thread width 7.0", section width 9.29"

Dunlop: diameter 31.8", thread width 6.9", section width 9.2"

Pretty damm close, I really don't see a problem, unless you are really anal :-)

You changed the tire size on your post since I posted, here is the size for 265/75/16:

Cooper: diameter 31.64-31.76", thread width 8.1", section width 10.5-10.59"

Dunlop: diameter 31.5", thread width 8.1", section width 10.7"

There is a size difference with the 265/75/16 tire, not sure if it is going to be a problem now.

I like Mikey's idea..... buy 'em, then trade the two Coopers and get two Dunlops to match the other 3. Or, if money's that tight, get 'em, use one of the Coopers as a spare, and trade the other Cooper for one matching Dunlop....

IMHO, FWIW....

The coopers are RWL and the Dunlops are not, I thinking of putting the letters out and on opposite corners of the truck... :-) I had thought about trading the two coopers, or just one, for dunlop's. But since they seem to measure the same I started wonder if it was really nessacary. I was worried about what Paul mentioned, diameter. I worry if I mount them and they are different, how much is a difference a bad thing? I think I'll get them, I'd just perfer to mount them and just run them, instaed of dealing with getting new dunlops and selling the coopers. Looking at those links, the coopers have changed a little, they are closer in thread to the dunlops up close and in person. Maybe trade both coopers for one dunlop and keep my little 245/70 as a spare. :-) It's jeep thing, I wouldn't understand ...

Don't use a 245/70 as a spare for 265/75s.... that would NOT be good. On a full-time 4x4 like a Rover, keep 'em all the same size, IMHO.....

It's NOT a Jeep.... :-)

Could just first run the three dunlops and one cooper and see if there is any height difference, then if there is a noticeable difference, get one dunlop. Please don't run white letters out, on a jeep maybe, but on a rover? Just my opinion :-)

sure, it would be a pain to sell your coopers, but hell...you bought a slightly missmatched *new* set of tires for $50 bucks...take a little time and really make it a good deal by getting at least 4 of the same on the ground...

yeah...and munch those white letters...!

There are 3 trends here in Utah, One a real offroad jeep with big tires and matching spare. Two, big tires with a stock sized little spare. Three, big tires and no spare and spareholder removed. I was told they take the spare off for better departure angles, but the guys really needing that have a spare mounted in the behind the front seats or on a roof rack. I was kidding about the RWL and spare thing by the way. Problem is I'm a cheap bastard even with $50 tires, lol . I need to shop around now to see how I can trade them. I think I might buy one Dunlop and keep one cooper as spare and toss the other cooper in my shed as a backup for a bad day. I wonder what the percent size difference in tires a rover is allowed though, 5% max?

What I see here in Oklahoma is lots of lifted jeeps with big tires and stock spare tires, proabably too cheap to buy a real spare and why do you need a proper size spare, this jeep never goes off-road anyway, plus if I get a flat I'll just call my parents.

One of my co-workers bought a 2003 sport TJ about a month ago and put a 3" lift and 33" tires on and still has the stock 30" spare. He said to me he's going to wheel with all the time, I just laughed on the inside and said, "sounds fun, those new MTR's you got should work out well for you".
