Hey guys, I've had my 03 Disco for a week now and now have 500 miles on it. Today, a bunch of birds dive-bombed the crap out of it, so I took it to the car wash to wash it off. While my Disco was going through the carwash, the check engine light came on and started idling a little rough. I've tried everything and the light won't go back off, which is unfortunately becausing i'm going offroading at Paragon next weekend on July 5th. Has anyone else experienced this before, and what could have caused the light to come on just by driving through a carwash?

I guess I should add that i've taken every single vehicle i've owned through this carwash, which including my former lemon Freelander, and i've never experienced this before. Tons of Disco's also go to this same carwash as well..........

Howzit, June
I guess that your '03 is not a "Disco Duck"..
Just kidding...I have a '94 and the check engine light and I have become friends cuz we see each other so often.
BTW, Since you have an '03, please tell us what the dealer said caused the CE Light to go on.
Do you know if a code came up,...and what it is?
Dumb Question , but here goes. Why do you think your former Freelander is a Lemon.

Good Luck with Your New LR .
Aloha, Lou

Man i wouldnt take it to a car wash next time. Just wash it by hand. Those car wash will strip the wax and clear coat off the truck and scratch it. If the check engine light is on its throwing a code. You might want to take to Autozone or a shop the check.

Thanks guys. I take all of my vehicles to this carwash which is a soft cloth wash. The website is http://www.mikescarwash.com and your vehicle really does come out looking good. It's a bit on the expensive side at $13 a wash, but it's very gentle. It also gently buffs away the brake dust on the rims, and also gently sprays down the underbody coating it with a rust inhibitor.

I just bought this brand new, and if an 03 Disco can't handle a carwash, i'd hate to see what kind of wierd lights will pop on the dash when I take it and wade it through a creek this coming weekend when I was supposed to take it offroad. I'm going to see if the dealer can take a look and possibly fix what's wrong by Thursday, but if they can't, then this will be the second time i've had to cancel an offroading trip because the Rover started acting up.

BTW, my Freelander had more problems than you can shake a stick at. It spent 84 days of the 6 months i've owned it in the shop for countless warranty repairs which is why Land Rover finally voluntarily bought it back. You name it, it went wrong on that thing.

CE light coming on while in the car wash could be unrelated. Just take the truck in and find out what the code is.

Well, I stopped by a neighborhood friendly Autozone and had them run my car for some codes. When he pulled the codes, he got a code for a fault in the evaporative control system. Apparantly he said it's most likely an issue with the fuel cap, so he reset the computer and now the check engine light is off. I always make sure that the fuel cap is on tight as I always turn it halfway more once it starts clicking. I'm heading to the carwash again and am about to run through it to see if we can repeat the check engine light. The fuel cap does seem a little loose as there is a little play side to side in it, but who knows........

Well, I took my car through the same carwash and this time it didn't trip the check engine light. First thing tomarrow morning, i'm still going to head to the dealership so that they can at least pressure test the fuel cap to see if it's leaking any. On a side note, I met a very cool owner of a beautiful Oslo Blue 03 Disco S who was serious into offroading and had a good 3 inch lift along with some big tires on it.

Thanks for the update June. Yes, a small thing such as a fuel cap apparently can cause a check engine light to shine. It's about the only light that doesn't fizzle on a Disco, ..the service engine light comes in at a close 2nd.
An assoiate at work just got a freelander for a company car so I want to keep an eye out to see what the Menehunes (gremlins in Hawaiian) have in store for this Free?lander .
Good luck with your Disco on your offroading adventure. Aloha, Lou

Thanks Louis........

The dealer couldn't do anything because when I had Autozone scan it for codes, they must have reset the computer since no codes could be found. However, my dealer did tell me to come back if the light comes back on. I am thinking about just buying a spare fuel cap at the dealership just in case just to take every precaution I can since having the SES light pop up while riding on the trails would be very unnerving.....
