I stopped by a quik change to get the fluid changed in the Diff. and the transfer case. as i sat in my beloved LR the pit monkey asked for the ATF fluid dispenser. this made me curious and after several attempts i was able to get the manage over and ask if that was auto fluid you just put in my transfer case. he told me it was that his computer showed that was correct. i then pointed out that my owners manual advised 90 or 80 wt gear oil. the manager then went and picked up his Valvoline service manual. he turned to the pager for Land Rovers and under the RR for the appropriate year he pointed out that it takes ATF. i then pointed out that i have Discovery and under that heading for the appropriate year it reads 80/90 wt. he then returned down to the RR and told me that htis was the correct fluid, but he would put in what ever i wanted. i referred back to the owners manual and told him i had a Land Rover Discovery and not a RR and the the transfer cases may differ. the manager was polite and told me that most newer vehicles run ATF in the transfer case. as it happens i had my laptop in my truck. i have a copy of the LR service manual on my hard-drive. i fired the lil puter up and ventured to the correct page and pointed out the LR boyz tell me it takes 80/90 wt. the manager now convinced i have way to many toys orders his pit monkey to drain the transfer case and re-fill it with 80 wt gear oil. now i was really puzzled at this point for the manager pointed out that it was ATF that ran out the drain hole. so having this sinking filling in the pit of my stomach i then reacj out and call two LR dealers in the Ohio area tha ti had numbers for. of course there was no body in the shop but both sales dude advised me to fall back to the owners manual and go with that. so now i have 80wt in the transfer case. amazing as it may sound the gear noise has decreased from that part of the cab.
so if you have managed to read this far, i ask the all knowing DWebbers has anyone heard of a service order changing the oil requirements for the LT230 series transfer cases or did someone screw up and put the wrong lube in the case when i had it last changed?

thanks

Point 1: 80/90W is correct for the LT230. ATF is used in the RR Borg Warner cases.

Point 2: Why are you letting the "pit monkey" change your fluids? The disco has to be one of the easiest vehicles to work on.

It may have had a synthetic gear oil like Castrol syntrax in it this is red and looks like ATF but it is 75/90. I run Penrite 10/10ths synthetic 75/90 race oil in my car and in any car I work on if people will pay for it.

Further reason never to trust your vehicle to a grease monkey in a box. Get yourself a factory service manual and do your own lube jobs -- it doesn't take long and you'll have piece of mind knowing that some pit monkey with room-temperature IQ didn't put wiper fluid in your power steering box or anti-freeze in your differentials (it's a good thing they don't have any idea what a swivel ball is so they can't screw that up as well).

I use Amsoil 75/90 synthetic gear oil augmented with Lucas Oil Stabilizer to slow down the leaks when they arise.

Fill the case until you can't put in any more through the side filler hole. I don't believe it is possible to overfill one, at least, I don't think I have.

That was lucky. Never let those f**kwits work on your Disco unsupervised. I nearly had a "4X4 Speacialist" tyre dealer try and jack her up on the bottom lip of the front wing!
