Has anyone ever seen a Kalahari Edition DII? I read that there were only 150 made worldwide. What's the beef with them and why are they so special?

I had an acquaintence that just sold one here locally. Was a 2002 model. He only had 5000 miles on it. Had to sell it to support some foster kids he was taking on instead of the mega payments. I never got to ride in it, but I thought it looked cool.

PS: Why is a Kalahari edition so special? Is it built with non-Lucas components?

There was one at the dealer here that I had a look at. As far as I could gather from looking at it and talking to the sales guide, it's not a whole lot different from the regular D2's. It's yellow, the hood was blacked out, the front had smaller bumper caps, much like you would if you cut the air dam off and trimmed the bumper caps and the interior cosmetics was different. The seats I believe were leather with black cloth inserts...actually it looked sharp. The wheels were black alloys I believe, much like the ones on the Trek trucks. But as far as the sales guides said, wasn't a whole lot different mechanically and it wasn't priced that differently. Around $53,000 CDN. It was the only one they got and was sold the first day it arrived. I've seen it around a few times, usually at a coffee shop.

Corey, there was one at the Las Vegas LR dealership in Sept. when I bought my D1. I am not sure what happened to it. If you're looking to buy, perhaps call them to see if they still have it.

My dealer had about 5 of them. And it is a tiny dealership.

I find it hard to believe that there were only 150. I don't think there was anything special except what was mentioned above. Also they came in more than those three colors, I have also seen them in grey.

Grey was mentioned above, and they were ONLY availible in yellow, grey, and white. Only 150? I don't see how that's possible--LR Chattanooga had AT LEAST 3--and one in each color. Surely LR Chattanooga isn't big enough to justify 1/50 of the entire stock?!?

There is a Kalahari in the Las Vegas LR showroom. It has been further modified by the dealer with every bit that SG makes. It also has a Hannibal tent mounted up top, a rear mounted barbeque (kinda cute, really), an air compressor with quick-release fittings front & rear. There are so many additional bits I can't remember 1/10 of them. Maybe I'll stop by and copy the list of options just for the hell of it...

Kevin's right about those numbers - the yellow ones are the most "common." I don't know if it's worth the extra money, but you do get some of the mods you'd otherwise do yourself. What I don't understand about the Kalahari, though, is that it's based on the SE, so you're forced to buy sunroofs, etc. I'd rather have a truck I can hose out after taking it offroad somewhere. Still waiting for Defender to come back...

Not an easy sell in yellow, according to two different sales guys I talked to. I don't know - I like that color - Camel Trophy and all that.

I do take mine offroad often. That's when all that $$$ feels worth it.

PS - The stock, hand-built cutaway bumper was done well, but the stock brush bar wraps too far down underneath. I'm a lot more comfortable with my ARB - I don't feel as if I'm going to get hung up on every little rut.

I love the Kalahari. They are really neat inside. The interior is just plain cool. I sold a white Kalahari, and just about everyone at the dealership went on and on about how they loved it so much. It piqued everyone's interest. Although all the info said it was duragrain, the one we had was definitely leather with the cloth inserts.

Interesting. Mine's obviously Duragrain - the "seat finisher" panel over one of the seat hinges was off when I bought the truck, so I was able to get a good look. Duragrain's fine with me, though.
