I remember three to four years ago, there were different names on this board. I mean, I think its great to have a lot of new guys but the seasoned off-roaders with all their knowledge don't post anymore. What happened??

I've noticed a lot of new names on the board. It was like Discoweb.org stickers/cards are provided with new/used Discos. I guess the old guys lurk due to the "03 lights fit a 95" type questions. Don't get me wrong, I've asked withouth doing a search to.

You know you are old when:

The acceleration of your rig to freeway speed pisses everyone off but you.

Your driving music consists of Buffet, Bob M., and All Songs Considered from NPR.

You no longer have a guys night out; rather you sit down with a beer and hang out on DWEB.

I went to a "Chicago" concert a couple of years ago, and I enjoyed it! I still own Crocodile Rock on 45. Actually, I have a 78 of Elvis' Hound Dog. Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about? On a good day, I still get carded (ID'd at the liquor store) - go figure.

Hmmm...well, back to the original topic. I can only speak from my perspective, but it seems that some on this board have become increasingly vindictive towards others who offer a sound opinion. It gets pretty old after a while and many who used to participate more simply move on to more productive ventures.

This is not to knock the board itself. It is still a great resource. However, one might look at the decline in the number of postings from Ho, Kyle, and Axle in recent months to see if something might be awry. I think many of the "old timers" have fallen suit. I am not sure if I am an "old timer" or not. I know that I have only so much to contribte as well. However, while I lurk and post from time to time, I just don't find it entertaining to tangle with most of the regulars anymore.

The way that I see it, the "old timers" get tired of responding to the same constant questions from the "newer members" so they lurk, and occasionally post where appropriate. It would be fair to say that its easier to ask the questions (and increase member status), when one first joins, than it is to search the archives, but think of how many posts there would be each day if all the members satisfied their queries via that medium. I guess in time most of the senior members today will also become lurkers, or phantoms of the discoweb waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting Newbie...hehe!

By older members I take it that he meant members that had been on the board for some time. Whats the point in posting when you get 25 young hard heads arguing with you about what you posted ?
Whats the point of advising good directions to go in when cheap and cool take over in the end anyway ?
I would estimate that around 85% of this board would put price over quality. Once thats done there really isnt a conversation worth me joining. I just watch and laugh... :-) I would imagine that the pendelum will swing the other way in the future and these people will sell off the heap they have created and we will get back to what we had... Right now its just burning bandwith...

It seems to be doing just fine. We took a little jaunt down to Richmond on Sunday. I had my eyes peeled for those "Richmond Chicks", but never even spied the dealership, let alone the "chicks". Always nice to put a few miles on the Disco.

Pete,
The problem is there are too many dumb, cheap fuckers on this site right now. For example, go up and look at the post by Daniel Covucio in the impact wrench thread. People that have been surfing this site for years don't want any part of these dumb asses. Danno there should get his ass kicked for posting about the astronauts that died like that. He's so hell bent on making his cheap bastard attitudes accepted to the masses that he'll say anything to make a point. Well I think a lot of people here are tired of these dumb asses and they'd just rather not post than have to communicate with fuck sticks like Daniel Coviuci. I'm sure all of his cheap fuck buddies will chime in now. Oh well, maybe one day the pendulum will swing.....

Don't hold your breath on this one buddy. You will run out of O2 well before your body needs it:-)

Greg,

"The problem is there are too many dumb, cheap fuckers on this site right now."

No shit and it is getting pathetic. I recently tangled with some jackass saying that a backhoe could not lift a D90 after pics had been posted. He actually thought someone doctored the pics. Imagine: going to the effort of doctoring pics to show what a dumbass you are for driving into a ravine! Oh well, I guess it takes all types.

I don't think the pendulum will swing the other way. As I said earlier, the senior members have, and will get tired of answering the same old questions and retire to the "outer reaches" of Disco Web as lurkers, while the void is filled with more newbies; And so the cycle will continue.....

BTW, I totally agree with Kyle's assessment of the cheap arse brigade. There is an old saying that comes to mind, "Quality is like buying oats, if you want nice clean oats you must pay a fair price, however, if you can be satisfied with oats that have passed through the horse, that comes a little cheaper"!

Carter, how is this thread useless? I simply wanted to get everyones opinion on this board. I have loved this board every since I first discovered it. I never posted, I simply read on to learn about Rovers. Then I began to post, but I don't like the way the BBS has become. It was more humble back in the day.

LOL John.
I've noticed the same thing that others have mentioned. Over the past ~6 months, tons of people have come to this site that dont really add anything to it. They just ask the same questions over and over again, make useless posts, and generally use the BBS as a chat room.

Like everyone else, im just waiting(hoping) that the "old" discoweb will come back.

I guess I've kinda been here for while. I usually don't have anything good to say so I just shutup.

Ah yes, I remember when this board resembled the current Roversnorth board and everyone was buzzing about that D2 that got washed away in the river, and totalling it. LOL, that was a long time ago....

Yes, there has been an influx of cheap people, including myself. I try to strike a balance between saving money and having good equipment. Sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and dish out the cash, other times, you can make something yourself and save mucho $$$$$.

Also, a lot of stuff has been done in the past 3 years. In 2000, when the new disco came out, a lot of people thought that it sucked and wouldn't wheel worth a damn. Well, that statement is very inaccurate as many D2s out there get wheeled thoroughly. Before, it was thought that a lot of cable on a winch was good, but now having smaller amounts is better. Before, there wasn't a lot of "shut the fuck up", but now there is... This is just my observation of what has happened here. Stuff changes and shit happens.

I guess we have to accept the fact that in some instances some posts will contain trivia (I plead guilty), but do we have to be serious all the time? My idea of a good BBS is where you get the information you want as well as give advice. Flaming is something we all have to contend with and lets face it, some have been quite humorous.

Carter-

John was running his wrenches at spec. Maybe you too are an extreeme person who lives an extreeme lifestyle, but when you're using a $350 impact wrench, longevity is best assured by running the wrench within spec, which is very clearly listed at 90 PSI.

Or perhaps you just like wearing out and replacing cheap-shit tools often by running them out of spec.

" You take the good, you take the bad
you take them both and there you have

the facts of life...

the facts of life are all about you... you...

Even my cheap shit craftsman is speced at higher than 90 psi, but if thats what John's snap on is speced for I will gladely concede. Perhapse he can then use the extra psi to further inflate his ego.

Ok now! With Carter here we have an example of why the "old-timers" don't post. He is truly vindictive, spiteful, and totally inaccurate all at the same time. Carter, if this board is your life then you need counseling. If it is not your life then you need to clog your trap and get counseling. Either way: you need help and it will not come from here. I try not to belittle souls such as yours, but I gotta admit that I saw a likeness of you in the photo beside "Dumbass" in the OED.

Really, I find it very amusing that the symptom emerges in a post inquiring about the problem.

I don't think a lot of us would say the things we say on here if we were doing this in person...we'd more likely just walk away. Unfortunately, people don't excercise the same type of restraint or class when they're behind a monitor. This isn't an age issue, it's a respect issue.

I think I started reading and posting on the board in 99 or 00 then I got off for awhile and forgot my user name and had to change. Back then it was Kyle and Justin arguing about ETC. In those days it wasn't nearly so mondane to read about wich lift is the best. Now I just don't read those type of posts until the count gets long...then I know it probably got entertaining along the way.

I think we all used to talk about wheeling a bit more than we do now. I like that and I like to read and discuss technics.

This website is an ever evolving cycle. The new guys will learn and become the old guys and they will no longer ask those type of q. and willno longer respond to them. New guys will still keep coming.

The cheap guys...and I am not sure if I qualify or not, but I probably do...will keep looking for ways to be cheap. But I think there are levels to that. For me, I would not dream of calling a vendor or directly e-mailing one with a question and then price shop him afterward. That is such bad form and it fires me up when someone does it to me. But I will ask a q on the board and if the vendor feals like answering then that is a different deal altogether.

For me and the amount and type of wheeling I do I have to look for alternative ways to keep my truck running. There are things that matter and things that don't. When it's things that matter though...you hav to spend the money the first time or you will spend it twice. I dont' always catch on to this and I have paid much more than twice a few times. I hate that.

Yeah well John Lee is one of the only people I WOULD say this stuff to in person, his attitude just anoys me to no end. Everyone else around there is fine even if we do have some disagreements. I'm sure not everyone around here really likes me but I also notice a lot more people consistently slamming John Lee than slamming me.

When I first came here I spend a good 2-3 months before registering, I didn't bother to ask a whole bunch of dumb questions becasue I found the answers to all of them in the archives first. I'm sure I have asked a few in the past but I really think the number is no where near what is going on today. I know my truck does not have the highest end stuff available on it but that is simply a function of my budget. I buy the best stuff I can afford, most of the time it was worked out for me and a few times I have wound up kicking myself. I don't feel the need to buy a bunch of stuff just to win approval from people like John, my disco is never going to run the Rubicon and I don't pretend it will, the main function of my truck is to get me back to fishing spots and the like. I'm not talking this "blazing my own trails" crap but simply unmaintained forest roads and trails in the national forest system to get to smallmouth streams as well as the occasional beach for the saltwater stuff that is currently more frequent. Every modification to my truck has been used and proven neccessary, I would like to install a rear locker to save me some winching with my smoker but right now a new Ross Canyon Big Game fly reel is of higher importance to me. My roof rack (surco) is definitly the worst mod on my truck as far as quality but I got it at a time when I NEEDED a roof rack for hauling gear and boats around and absolutely did not have the money to drop on a quality rack so I shelled out $200 for the surco (which I will hopefully re-sell for $100) instead of spending more on a medium quality Wilderness rack or the like that would also need replacing down the road. I think the surco is going to be replaced very soon and I am really looking forward to it, my demands definitly excede its capabilities. So as far as cheap goes I have a crapy roof rack but I knew it was crapy when I bought it, I'm just not ready to go into debt to please the likes of John "let me provide you with ten thousand hyper-links to my mid-life crisis" Lee. If I where only interested in saving a dime I would be driving an XJ.

Carter, come on now...

Do they really need the information?

In the big scheme of things, does it really matter?

In the end, after it's all been said and all has been done, you're going to do your thing, and they're going to do their thing, so why let it bother you?

There is no god damned debate its just as simple as what has been typed. If it hurts your feelings then get the fuck over it. Thats life... Funny how this thread turned into the very reason that we dont post anymore.... Hillarious actually... Gee Curtis that seems to show a profound lack of wisdom on your part. I mean if this guy was such a dumbass why waste your time responding to him. Myself I never, well almost never, I am responding to your post after all, give a second thought to a post made by the mentally deficient.

Dan Watson,

LOL! I need to party with you sometime.

Have fun on your backhoe. I will enjoy the pictures when you post. Keep in mind that there will be a lot of eyes watching and you will also have to name the hoe you use and identify and compare it to the one in the pic. Sorry, just the reality of a board keeping you in check.

BTW - remember when I called you a liar? Whatever happened to me being "so easy to ignore", and you "not responding to your (my) posts". Funny how anger can transcend the otherwise honest intentions of a man.

Has serious consideration been put into creating a FAQ For Newbies or the like to answer 80% of the repetitive questions? In a perfect world there would be some AI built in so when you go to post "What size socket do I use for the lug nuts?" it would pick out keywords and present you with some options of answers in the FAQ, before you actually posted. So hopefully all the same questions would be answered with out the same stuff clogging the lines.
It would be a lot of work though to get it set up and I doubt it is something easy to integrate with the Discus software.

An AI would be great. But what if the AI got so advanced that it took over the board and then it governed our input into the board???? I have a feeling like it would be one of those things that backfires really bad.

As for all of the "older guys", they all went 4 wheelin'. I find it to be much more enjoyable than sitting around talking about AIs.

There is an FAQ, it is under the tech section. Also in the tech section is a whole list a articles, install tips and instructions, specs, etc. that answer quite a few of the questions that get asked over and over again on the boards.

Well I was being sarcastic the other night, really had no intention of trying to lift something to prove some meaningless point, but the crew and I started talking about it and one thing lead to another and well… I have pics.

A couple of things first Curt, I never get angry at something posted online. Don’t really give much credit to the opinions of people I don’t know. So if you were hoping you pissed me off, well sorry to disappoint.

As for the original reason for this post, I never stopped to consider why this person may have come up with his story. There are urban legends all over the internet, why do people take the time to make them up? I was only saying that the picture of the backhoe lifting a SUV was way beyond anything I know they are capable of.

So as for my little experiment. Tried lifting our old L2900 with the backhoe I have at work. It lifted the front off the ground with ease, but when it came to lifting the whole tractor… well it did manage to get two wheels off the ground, which was more than I thought it would do. Pictures are here; http://www.psci.net/dawatson/
God I can’t believe I actually did this, I guess when one starts working seven days a week for the last few months any little distraction is welcome.

LOL, ok maybe use of the term AI was a bit far fetched. I wouldn't feel too good if it was Discoweb that brought about the end of the world when it became "aware" that you really can't get any more MPG out of a Disco no matter how hard you try.
I just thought it would be cool to have a shortcut to relevant FAQ info (as in LOTS of it) when you put in a simple question, especially about specs or which size socket to use, etc... By default, it would call everyone a CB first and make you prove you're not. :-)

ROTFLMAO. Here we go again. I have been debating whether to tangle with you again Dan. By that I mean that I really do not have anything to prove. I saw a pic and saw that it was good. You viewed the same pic as a great conspiracy to overthrow the already overwhelming amount of bandwidth available in the US. Now you have gone to the extent of posting meaningless pics which show: nothing. Well, I guess it does show why the "old timers" do not post as much.

How did you hold the loader down? FYI: that is the big bucket on the front. Also, why did you have the extension and bucket set full-out when the original pic obviously had the extension at about 1/2 and the bucket fully tucked? Why did you not show a pic of the front end rising?

The reason is simple: you are full of shit. That is a brief IMO, but it sums it up pretty well. If you would like I can summon up some quotes of yours in the past that prove this. One of which said you would never respond to a post of mine again. Hmmm...

Maybe Evan will pipe up to give you support since he is the icon of credibility:-)

I hate to double my response, but you play directly into the meaning of this thread. The more I look at your pics, the more full of crap you appear. I am amazed that you are trying to pull this off.

Before you go trying to justify your BS photos, keep in mind one thing: In this thread I never called you out by name. The name of Dan Watson was never added to this until you decided to post. I kept you anonymous by simply calling you jackass. While you have proven the nickname true, you have done nothing but prove my point.

Thanks Dan. I owe you a beer. Although a liar and jackass you are at least willing to go to give a good and decent effort at proving your point:-)

There are one or 2 AI "hacks" for BBS's that do a pretty good job of answering when certain triggers are posted. However, all the ones I am familar with have all have been geared towards the full SQL based vBulletin type forum software. Discus (this forum)is an HTML based BBS with an optional SQL add in, which is fairly new for them and not too many people spend the time to create hacks for it.

But really, 70% of the repetitive question asking issue could be solved very easily if people would stop being lazy and take the few extra minutes to simply do a search before posting.

Great post. I've been thinking the same thing for a while now. I use to love getting slamed by the seasoned guys for being an idiot, cheap bastard etc. I've only been here for a year now, and it is not like it us to be. I lurk here from time to time, but don't have the $$ to upgrade my rig, it has actually been running ok, and don't have time to wheel with a 3 month old, so I usually surf elseware. I am not a fountain of info like most here, so if I have nothing good to add to a post, I don't. So why the hell am I posting here. Not sure. Just trying to boost my numbers.

And I'll be turning 28 in two weeks.

OK so I’m full of shit, a jackass, and a liar, whatever turns your crank. Still doesn’t change the fact that a wheeled hoe isn’t going to lift a D 90.

BTW
The pic on that site showed the hoe with the 90 up in the air, to reach down to get it it would have to be almost fully extened, IMHO. And the pic of the tires of the L2900 showed how far the hoe had managed to lift them off the ground…and, as I told my crew, I could wrap a chain around your neck, fail to lift you off the ground and with your dying breath you would claim that it proved nothing.

"Funny how this thread turned into the very reason that we dont post anymore...."

Amen, Kyle.

I bought my Disco in 97, back when you still had to pay $20 grand for a used truck. Not trying to be elitest really, but the fact that you can now buy a Disco for under $10 grand changes people's perspectives about them. People then really wanted to make quality modifications to their vehicles, because their vehicles meant a lot to them.

When I first started checking out D-Web you didn't have to "register". I had quit the Rovers North boards because people were just bitching at each other, and thought D-Web was the single best source of Disco info on the web. Hell, at that time, hardly anyone was even making Disco bumpers, for example, so it was really worth asking someone here what they thought of the ARB vs. SafariGard (the only two options at the time, as I recall).

But now, modifications are a dime a dozen, trucks are cheap, and every idiot has a hot-headed opinion. We have guys attacking Discos with welders and tube benders, and why? Because the trucks are so damn cheap now! 5 or 6 years ago those kinds of guys were still hacking up CJs.

Plus, this forum was never meant to be simply a debating society, or a place to just bitch. It sucks, and it's why I don't post anymore. A lot of the people posting now aren't really Rover people, they are just passing through. I mean, really, I just read another thread that started with a guy on a trail with stock tires and no winch, and ended with him having 35" tires and two lockers! Shit, it wasn't so long ago when 265/75s were the biggest ANYONE was running. You couldn't even buy a 15" rim. Camel Trophy trucks ran 7.00x16s, didn't they? MAYBE 7.50x16s...

Of course, Series owners have been predicting this shift in attitudes for years, and with every new model!

Is there as much of the bitching and whining on the D-90 list? Maybe I just need to switch trucks.

Anyway, my ramblings aren't really worth much, but I look forward to the next version of D-Web. The original comunity of D-Webbers was one of the reasons I liked my truck as much as I did. That's not really a factor anymore.

Enoch

PS- Karen, nice to hear from you! Just listened to some Johnny Clegg (Juluka, actually) yesterday...

"OK so I’m full of shit, a jackass, and a liar, whatever turns your crank. Still doesn’t change the fact that a wheeled hoe isn’t going to lift a D 90."

Uh huh, and your vast experience grooming golf courses goes to show this. Albeit contrary to others experiences, manufacturers specs, and photos.

"…and, as I told my crew, I could wrap a chain around your neck, fail to lift you off the ground and with your dying breath you would claim that it proved nothing."

This is an intersting quote. Not only because you want to wrap a chain around my neck, but further, because you are actually sharing this with people who work for you. I guess this means you are not only a liar, but also an oppresive boss with homicidal tendencies. This must do wonders for morale on the job.

I think at this point (and as I have said many times), it is just simpler to say that you are right. Your vast knowledge and experience must prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that some guy was pulling an internet hoax. At least he fooled me. It may have cost him the expense of a backoe (not "backhole" as you call those thingies), a dozer, a wrecked D90, and the $600 for Photoshop, but he still got me. Good thing you are looking out for the rest of us.

Well Mr. Newkirk,
You had to do it . Was it that you couldn't find any of your underage wives to molest , no one to guide thru Moab, go kart records to break ? Was John's board down and you had nowhere to post? I'm complimented you felt the need to call me out, with you vast experience on a backhoe (not "backoe" as you call those thingies),. I recall your quote as, "I've never been on a backhoe in my life" .Bullshit was called , you where wrong .

Actually I was going to behave myself by continuing to lurk as I usually do until I'm drawn out by the fun ( after all its about the entertainment value) but I just couldn't pass up the oppertunity to bring up spelling errors .
I'll make use of my favorite John Lee's line, "Merry Christmas" Curtis Newkirk
BIG HUGS,
Evan

quote:

When I first started checking out D-Web you didn't have to "register".

Yeah, we resisted registraton for the longest time, but finally had to implement it. The level and quality (or lack thereof) of unregistered, anonymous posts just became uncontrollable.

We have been cracking down more on some of the useless posting lately though, and that will continue.

I think you are right though, used Disco's are getting cheaper, so you have a different type of crowd now than what there used to be a few years ago. Allthough to be fair, there were quite a few assholes around back in the old days, too. (they just weren't here..... :-))

Most people on this site are ok, though. It is just that the site has gotten a lot bigger than it was in the beginning, so of course with a larger number of visitors, the number of annoying visitors will be higher as well, even though the percentage stays the same....

I don't post as much as I used to, not because I am getting tired of Dweb, it is because I am getting more and more busy with the things required behind the scenes to keep the site running, edit video and so on. It takes several months to put each video together now.....

LOL! This is one of those moments where the sheer magnitude of the stupidity of your post speaks for itself. I really have nothing to add except that I get extreme pleasure knowing that you probably have no idea why others laugh at you so much.

Actually, I think I'm gonna sue discoweb for sucking me into this Rover addiction

I remember we were looking at VW Passat wagon for family hauling and maybe a TJ for summer fun and mild off-road use. LRs had that "You can't afford this vehicle" image but just for shits and giggles, my wife and I stopped by the LR dealership. To our surprise, the 99D1 wasn't as unattainable as we thought. At the dealership, I got a brochure for NY/NJ Land Rover Club and started surfing the web to learn more about them. Then started searching on the rover ring and found "The DiscoHo" Online Magazine for Discovery owners which then lead me to Axel files and eventually Discoweb. I remember my first post was asking which one to get, a D1 or D2. I think Axel was the one that responded explaining the differences in both. I think life was simpler back then. I do still enjoy this site and had gotten a ton of useful and money saving info out of it. So on that note, thanks to the tres amigos for keeping Discoweb alive.

Then why have a site at all? If you’re spending so much time editing movies to try to sell to people to support a site whose members bother you so much that you have to create an exclusive section…well then just drop the damn thing.

"The lounge is in test mode right now, we are not adding anyone to it yet, except for a few testers."

Hmmm...this might be interesting. On one end, I agree with Dan (wow!). It seems that it will run the risk of alienating a lot of people.

On the other side of the coin, it may eliminate a lot of the more annoying posts and keep out general lurkers who only pipe up when trouble can be caused.

Who knows?

I have given this some further thought. Going back to Dan's quote I see a very valid point: If the new and exclusive section alienates people and drops site usage, how is this really hurting Dweb?

These guys have to put up with all of this bullshit for nothing. They may get a few cents on the dollar for selling videos and T-shirts, but I am sure is little compensation and that is why they have real jobs.

Really, look at this thread. It has brought out all of the crap they have to contend with on a daily basis. If they are to implement a forum of verified and decent users it may piss some peaople off, but these are likely the people that the board can do without.

And what if Discoweb fails and drops into the history books because of this move? I am not sure, but I know I would care less if I was in thier shoes. These guys deserve a lot of credit for creating and maintaining this site.

BTW - I am all for making this a password-only accessed site. Allow anoyone in, and boot thier ass if they get out of line. This policy would have probably kicked my ass out a long time ago, but rules tend to keep honest people honest.

Well damn John you got me. Even though I’m a husband and father with obligations to a wife and kids, and a job, with bills to pay and a house to keep up, not to mention all my toys and hobbies I try to fit in, the only thing I really worry about is if I get into the lounge.

Look, I was only trying to make a point that to me it seems like someone is doing a lot of work to keep open a site that has no small amount of posters that annoy them. I hope this works out for the owners of this site. I do enjoy it and drop by whenever possible, and yes John will continue to do so even if I’m not invited into the lounge. It just seems that it has reached a crossroad of sorts.

last week

Dan, that is EXACTLY what this thread is all about. The "crossroads". This was reached a long time ago on the site, and the reasons for it WERE being discussed in a semi relevant fashion in this thread.

If you haven't figured it out. The owners of this site produce the films because it supports their costs, and supports the larger community. They do it for the love and a little cents on the dollar.

This goes for every other BBS on the web.

The web by it's nature has all walks of life these days. In maturing, this site and Disco's/off-roading in common have seen quite a change over the years. Damn it's just so hard to find a correllation...

Dan, I never said you the only thing you worry about is if you get into the Lounge. Just like all the other morons, you have nothing else to go on so you exaggerate what I say so that it sounds absurd and you can easily knock it down. I didn't say the only thing you worry about is getting into the Lounge. Rather, I said you wanted into the Lounge. There's a difference. If you don't want into the Lounge, just say so. You can be just like the other morons on this board who claim they "don't care" even though they're posting dozens of times and it's pretty obvious they're all heated up. But from reading your original post and your follow-up post, I think it's pretty clear that you want into the Lounge. Actually, it's for reasons like these that you'll probably never be invited into the Lounge.

For a consolation prize, you can do what Carter Simcoe does and post a trillion times about nothing. That way, you can get that elusive "Senior Member" status on your user profile.

Leslie, yeah, IFSJA has a BBS now. I don't very much like the format, and (as on other lists) the signal to noise ratio is low. Same shit going on there, however people tend to be less literate and more tolerant.

There was an interesting comment about Discos becoming cheap as dirt, and that changing people's attitude towards them. Not too long ago, I saw a 94 D1 (with a stick shift) and 89 Grand Wagoneer on the same used car lot, and having the same sticker price.

You know.. time after time, Kyle, Ax, & Ho said here on the board, that they have had enough of the excessive stupidity and foolishness and asked everyone to try and do their part to reduce it and that if not, then they were going to start looking at things to do in order to reduce it on their own.

Well, nobody listened, things only keep getting worse, and now, gosh, what a shocker, the 3 Amigos are trying things on their end.

Don't like it? Would you rather help keep the Discoweb a free open range for everyone to benefit from? Then get off your lazy asses and do your part. Keep the worthless and non-productive comments out of technical and Classified threads which right off the bat would greatly reduce the amount of flame wars that seem to brew up one after another. Treat others you are replying too, as you would like to be treated. EVERYONE needs to help make it a place again that doesn't require the site owners to start thinking of ways to separate groups from the others. EVERYONE needs to help make it a place once again where a new enthusiast doesn't to have to be afraid to ask a question that the rest of the group may think silly or take for granted. (and you newbies, please, do some searches first)

If that's too much for anyone to handle, maybe they should look for a new site to hang out on.

So I open the BB and see the lounge thing. Why not call it the disco lounge? or disco lizard lounge? I agree with the idea, alot of useless posts have been going on. I remember opening dweb and finding great info without all the mindless posting and bullshitting that goes on now. I'm not talking about off topic subjects (non-rover or offroad driving related) I'm talking about posting your opinion on things you don't know anything about or posting just to post. In the end it's owned and operated by people, who as nice as they are, can do what ever they want with it. If kicking off people on the bbs is the answer, they have the right to do it. If making it so only people they want on THEIR site is the solution, so be it. John Lee is right, a lot off people are posting a trillion times to just hear their own internet voices, not because they have anything to say or add to the conversation. The thing I hate about the internet is the lack of maturity on it. I used to follow various bicycling bbs's, but gave up when they became like what's happening to dweb now, lot's of annoying posts verses actual content. Maturity has nothing to do with your age or years of LR ownership, it has to do with attitude and knowing when to shut the hell up.

Well gee Johnny, I guess if the majority of the posts in the lounge are going to consist of calling names and making fun of those not allowed I won’t be missing much. I mean calling people names via the internet, how mature. I’d think twice before I point fingers and utter the word moron if I were you.

If you look at the concept of a “lounge” within the context of this post then I should not be invited. I’m neither an “old timer” nor a hard core Discoer like others here. I love my Disco and enjoy coming to a place that other owners frequent to gather info and read some of the BS, that’s all. So don’t invite me, I’ll live, and it’s hardly the point of my previous post. From the tone of some of the post from you, Axle, and Kyle you seem to be fed up with no small amount of the people that post here so you are going to go hid in your lounge with a hand full of others. Will those be enough to support this site? Or are you going to ask people to support the site then deny them access to certain areas because you don’t approve of what they post. Hell just a little while back I left a post about trying to help and you suggested I just plain donate money. Now you misconstrue a post, call me a moron, and tease me because I won’t be invited to the lounge.

Yeah, for someone who feigns indifference, you seem to care a whole lot. You even bothered to craft very carefully a stealth message to the others who weren't invited into the Lounge.

"Hell just a little while back I left a post about trying to help and you suggested I just plain donate money."

This is even more bullshit from you. Help? How would making a DiscoWeb spare tire cover for your Disco help DiscoWeb? You said you wanted to help out DiscoWeb but you said you didn't want stickers or DVD's. My response to you was that if you truly wanted to help out DiscoWeb but didn't want stickers or DVD's, you could make a donation to DiscoWeb, as several others have done. I think that's an appropriate response to your disengenuous spare tire cover "help" idea.

Or maybe you you wanted to "help" DiscoWeb when you pirated the Land Rover manuals and wanted to be the hero of the cheap fucks by disseminating them for free through DiscoWeb. Was that your idea of offering "help" to DiscoWeb? By exposing DiscoWeb to a copyright lawsuit?

Your stated desire to help DiscoWeb is just more bullshit. You're not interested in helping DiscoWeb at all. Your credibility is as low as Carter Simcoe's or D. Chapman's or James Gall's or OJ Simpson's. Just like all of the other liars on this board, you think you're so smart and you think others are so stupid that they will believe your pathetic lies.

Here we have guys like Chris Marcel or Charles Pastrano who say they want to be invited into the Lounge. They're being honest. That may be an absurdity or an abstraction to you, but it's the best way to get results.

Ooops, my bad. I forgot to reply to this one:

"Now you misconstrue a post, call me a moron, and tease me because I won’t be invited to the lounge."

That's the way you frame it, because it makes me out to be the asshole. But take a step back and look at it again.

Am I really teasing you because you won't be invited into the Lounge?

Or, am I teasing you because you want to be invited into the Lounge but try to cover up your desire or envy or whatever?

There's a difference between those two scenarios.

First off Johnny you need no help from me to appear to be an asshole.

I would have been glad to pay for the right to use the Disco web emblem on a tire cover. But that’s not the point, you suggested I give money only too later call me names and such over something that really didn’t concern you, or at the least was posted with no ill will towards any one.

As for the manuals, well why would I pirate them? I had none of the trucks listed and asked for no money. I simply found that link while looking for something else and thought it might help someone here.

I’m not sure why you think I’m not interested in helping this site. The post I left about the stickers was deleted, not because of me, and I just had not gotten back to the subject yet. Of course after this BS I’d be hard pressed to help, and I would assume others might be feeling the same way.

It’s great that Chris wants to be invited to the lounge, and I never said I didn’t, just that I really didn’t care either way. This really has gotten completely out of hand, and I can’t help but wonder what your problem is. I’m about the most unassuming person you’d ever meet. I don’t care if you think I’m a moron, I don’t care if I’m invited to the lounge, I don’t care if you believe a word I post, and I sure as hell don’t care what my member status is. I enjoy this site and simply offered my opinion about the lounge, that’s all.

Okay shorty, I may have over 3,000 posts but they sure didn't come in only a few weeks. I never claimed I am not a frequent poster I just said there are others (like Blue) who post more and you aren't jumping down their throats. Also even back in the days when you didn't have to I was ALWAYS logged in when I did (unlike many others like Thom) so my post count rose more than others who were posting but not actually logging in. Take a look around and see all the others posting more crap then I am and then go back to your daily grind of being a short little dick.

Oh BTW that last comment of yours increased your physical hight by two whole inches!!!!! You are now a whoping four feet two inches!!! Time to go shop for new pants!!!!

I hate to double-post (I admit, I'm trying to get my post count up to a whopping 316), but Dan: It is possible to enjoy the site without posting. You think that this is getting out of hand, well then end it. You don't have to post a reply, you know...let it die. Or get over it. I hate to say it, but you're bringing this on yourself. I'm not an "old guy" by any means, but hell...I'm tired of the bullshit, too.

Hey John...FWIW, I want to be invited to the lounge, too.

Oh, and Dan...you're the one who appears to be an asshole. Buy some fucking stickers.

Oh damn! This thread is starting to get fun.

Andy, yeah, it's true. The DiscoWeb team banned Carter because of his incessant stupidity. Then, of course, Carter begged for mercy and the DiscoWeb Team, being nice guys, reduced his post count and let him back on.

Notice how Carter's response to my post was something like "Bullshit, I didn't start from zero again; I started from 600". If the story were untrue, he would have said "Bullshit, I wasn't banned, blah, blah, blah...."

BTW, why is it that everyone who gets banned from DiscoWeb begs for mercy? For once I'd like to see someone get banned and then respond with something like "OK, fuck you guys, I'm outta here" and not come back. That would be the adult thing to do. But all of these losers get banned and then plead for leniency because they have no lives.

Little Johnny,

I never said it wasn't true. And yes, I asked Ho why I was banned, appologized and told him the circumstances which were leading me to such frequent posting (going stir crazy while writing a term paper), he told me to tell him when I was done, I did, and he turned my account back on.

Now whats the matter?? You slipping up?? I can't believe you didn't realize the intimate details of the post count thing. Maybe your getting a little senile over there shorty???

OK Zach I’ll end it, this will be my last post on the subject.

What am I bringing on myself, you really think he bothers me? I do think it’s odd that I make a post based only on my opinion and he takes exception to it, calls me names and such, and then you think I should drop it.

BTW
Zach, when you grow up and do something on your own I might give your opinion some weight. But not some kid who’s only here because mommy and daddy bought him a couple of rovers.

when is the last fucking time you gave any usable advice on this site?

you used to "wield your advice like an ax"

now all you do is sit back an ban people or delete threads and bitch. if it's your site then actually do something about it, by jumping in and saying "shut the fuck up" you've just joined the ones you condemn.

yeah i know i am just as bad for giving in but again , i am offering help noit jsut negativeness.

Is there a way that I can delete this whole god-forsaken thread? I shouldn't have even asked this question in the first. Why the fuck does everybody have to get all pissed off at each other? I would like to see what would happen if we all said these things to each other in person but that can't happen, only on the internet where people come to act like 2 year olds. I have to admit that the few times that I have posted it might have been about something stupid but at least I checked the archives. I do my part on DWeb by finding 99% of my problems with my rig doing a search, that way you never hear from me. We should respect each other but you always have a few assholes who don't give a shit. One thing I do want to add is if a newbie does post a what tire size or whatever type of question, why bash him or her? They are new to the site and perhaps they don't know that there are archives. Another thing is that people should respect John Lee and Ho etc. because I still say thank you to them for letting us use their BBS on EE when DWeb was down.

Oh, Dan...seeing as how that was your last post, I won't wait around for a reply. However, although my dad bought me The Rover (history lesson--a bone stock '95 with an engine that had to be replaced after about 4k miles), everything done to that truck has been paid for by me and me alone. I may be 18, but I know what it's like to work for something. It's taken me almost 3 years to pay for everything done to The Rover, and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. I truly believe that age is an attitude. So you may be 25 or 40 or 100 for all I care, but don't talk down to me just because you feel that I owe you something because you're my elder. To be honest, my suggestion to drop it was probably the best advice you'll ever receive on this BBS.

there is no doubt that this site has changed over its time. some may see it for the better, some may see it for the worse.

as a "fairly" enthusiast LR owner, my experience here has mostly been positive and rewarding especially for the technical content. it was very nice that the other brands of LRs were included and the Series board actually started to intice some fairly cool, savvy Series owners to it. that seems to be on the wane.

whats interesting is that DWeb has become mentioned in other sites as a "bad" place. that is becoming the perception from what I see. while the info here still can be found, especially if one were to do any research, its becoming more and more difficult to obtain a decent response.

at the same point in time, where else should one such as a new owner venture for credible information? there really are not that many sites out there which also might explain why this one has become very popular.

while the frustration level has probably become pretty high for those responsible for the site, is having a "private chat room" a good thing for those who first visit here and are really excited about being a LR owner?

in my opinion it is not. keep it open.

obviously this is only an opinion and as I've stated before - opinions are like assholes, evryone has one.

Understood Axel, just one more small post please, I invoke the “double post” option.

Zach
>To be honest, my suggestion to drop it was probably the best advice you'll ever receive on this BBS.<

See, that’s what I mean. I’ve already received much better advice on this forum than that, mostly by just reading and applying what others have said to my needs. But you think that telling me to “drop it” because Axel will ban me is the best advice I could receive. You think I don’t know I’m treading water here, but at least I’m willing to stand up and voice an opinion. I don’t want to be banned, but if Axel deems it necessary I’ll live. Life after 41 years has given me bigger things to worry about.

Zach
John; you rule, you’re cool.

Dan; you suck, drop it.

Please invite me to the Lounge.

Dan:
You are still posting, so I haven't banned you yet, have I? I don't ban people just because I disagree with them, or think they are Cheap Bastards. That was a general comment, which category I put you in is irrelevant.
Jaime:
Yeah, I am aware that Dweb does not have the best reputation on some sites, which is why we are implementing changes. Wheter having a private area will turn the site around remains to be seen. That really depends on what gets discussed in there and how the results of those discussions gets implemented on the rest of the site, doen't it? Stay tuned......

First off, Dan, don't EVER call me "son." I have a dad, thanks...and he knows when to shut his mouth. Nobody said you sucked, Dan, but you can't expect to dish out shit without taking some yourself. If you want me to lose my temper, tough. I will not stoop to your level. All I am saying is that you should choose your battles. Do you really think that making a stand on DiscoWeb makes you a better person? News flash Dan: nobody here cares. Sorry if you are too stubborn or stuck on yourself to take advice from a teenager...that's your loss. And to be honest, it's not all your fault. John, Axel, Kyle--everybody on this site lets their mouth run away from time to time, myself included. However, you are the protaganist here. Get over yourself and move on. It is just a stupid thread that got out of control. Here's how this can play out:
1) Everybody thinks Dan is an asshole. Dan bows out gracefully and everybody forgets it ever happened.

2) Everybody thinks Dan is an asshole. Dan keeps making ridiculous posts and aggs the problem on and on and on to no end...proving that everybody was right all along: Dan is an asshole.

Your choice, Dan...I guess being hardheaded and not knowing when to quit is one way to go through life, POPS...good luck.

Hey John, have you ever noticed how one tends to adopt the characteristics of those who one spends time with? e.g. if one moves from west coast to the deep south, after a while one will talk with a twang, or if all one's friends shovel shit for a living, one will eventually end up smelling like shit.

My point is that I'm afraid you may be in danger of lowering your IQ if you continue to post back & forth with some of these jackasses. We're worried about you, John. Please come to the intervention this afternoon in the Lounge.

Thank you, that is all.

Actually I think it was a good idea and I hope it works out well for whomever is invited/allowed. It's their site!

I, for one, am all for Carter being banned. Sorry Carter, but I agree with everyone else, your posts are 98% crap! You mentioned Blue having more posts than you and no one is climbing down his neck, well most of his posts contribute something to this board. Yours, on the otherhand, don't. You post 3 or more times in a row and it is all pointless.

We had had threads like this before. I don't always agree with things said on here, John...love ya man, but as I have said before, this site is priviatly owned and if the owners wish to imposse rules than why the hell do people have to bitch like little girls, your not in charge!

I have had dissagreements with people on this board but I can also follow the rules as well as everyone else. If you can't, Carter, than go somewhere else, why must you push it so far than to get banned. You are like a misquito buzzing around, just wont quit you have to be squashed.

yeah blue had more posts than I did his odometer just totally flipped while mine only got rolled back a little (not that it really matters). Sorry you don't like my posts Eric, in the future I would suggest just not reading them if they really bother you that much, its not like I've been personally attacking you or anything.

Is a "killfile" possible with the BB software Dweb uses? This might help a little.

A sense of humor is important on this site with the random attacks on credibility that Mr. Lee seems to pride himself on(I speak for myself). If he ever wheeled with me, he would understand that the single event that he uses to attack my credibility(submarine) was no lie. Because he can't get the full picture, he tells everyone that I'm a liar. I don't think that's mature but if I were to pass him on the trail, stuck for some reason, I would still offer to help. A grain of salt and humor is all that is needed.

wouldn't the mature thing be more like to let it go? isn't that sorta the point of this whole topic? isn't saying shut the fuck up approiate instead of ranting on forever in order to prove that your right? badgering only inflames, let it go and then theres nothing to get whizzed over!

imho

I've been driving across the country for the past week, so I'm just finishing up on this novel of a thread.

I have personally taken advantage of the good technical information that can be found here, and participating in the more substantive debates - like those on the war, has provided me insight and challenged me to even reconsider my own beliefs. In my opinion, for every idiot here who inflames, there are two or more who inform.

I hope that this thread, and the changes associated, will reinvigorate the site in a positive direction. Those with negative and empty offings might take it as a clue to migrate permanently to any of the other sites they invoke as "better" anytime a flame-war starts up.

As a person who has benefitted so directly from the better aspects and members of DiscoWeb, I would love to be invited to the lounge if the brass might think me to be a contributor.

Cheers,

e

Watson,
If you payed attention, you would know I let it go a long time ago. I just don't appreciate the almost weekly character attacks, would you? I saw that shirt and just thought it was funny like most would :-)

"Watson, If you payed attention, you would know I let it go a long time ago"

This is about as credible as:

"I’m about the most unassuming person you’d ever meet. I don’t care if you think I’m a moron, I don’t care if I’m invited to the lounge, I don’t care if you believe a word I post, and I sure as hell don’t care what my member status is."

and

"I’ll end it, this will be my last post on the subject"

It's like reaching into a bee hive to get some honey. You might not get stung, but you probably will. If you get stung, you can slowly remove your hand, remove the stinger, then lick the wound (and the honey). Or you can jam your arm deeper intop the hive and try and swat all the bees you can reach. At the very least you will just have a lot of smashed bees in your honey.

You guys run a good site, you deserve an inner-sactum for yourselves and your selected d-webbers. No matter what you people disuss in your lounge, everyone wants to be one of the select, but doesn't want to look uncool by saying so. It's human nature.

For most of us unwashed though, you still run a pretty good site.

Sorry John, not biting today. James posted something the other day about how this site is viewed elsewhere on the net and that made me stop and think. I visit a certain Jeep site that constantly bashes another BB because all it is is a bunch of flame wars. I now realize that I was helping to give this site the same reputation, too bad you can’t come to the same conclusion. The exchange with Curtis was all in good fun, the one with you wasn’t, but they both have the same result. I’ve gotten a lot of good info from this site and my actions of the last few days have been a poor way to show my appreciation. Have a great weekend John…

Close, but not quite. The reality is: "The older I get, the faster I was."

Some serious DWEB drama

Reading the few current posts its like I went away from home and came back 10 years later for the holidays and all the conversations were the same as when I first left...

Hey its Cyber Drama at its finest... Well it will have to do until American Choppers has live streaming... LOL

All in all its still a good read 99% of the time.

Thanks Team Disco Web....
