I just got my first winch and I put it on and everything last week. What are some things to do to keep it looking good and working well? |

I would say the biggest thing is re-wrapping the line once you use it. If you rewrap it the cable will last much longer, it takes a bit of disciplin to do it on the trail though, especially when everyone is waiting for your sorry stuck ass to get out of the way. I usually rewrap at the end of the trip or the night before the next one. |

Also, run it at least once a month to evaporate any moisture, and prevent rust as well as use a cover to protect it from rain |

about a year ago I had a problem with the brake on my winch. the thing would real in and out like it should but when i let off on the switch it would not hold a vehicle in place. it was very scary. I could not find any info on this problem so i just decided to take the thing apart and see what was wrong. about 1/2 cup of water poured out. the water was keeping the brake from working. i let the peices sit out over night for a couple of day till it dried out. Then i lightly greesed it and put it back together. Worked great. If you submerge it it can get water in it through the spool. Check that every so often. btw it is a warn 9500 hsi |

Like Chris said, use/run your winch once a month. After a day of splashing through streams...probably worth the effort to run the winch until hot as well. -Barry |
