I am soon to purchase a second spare tire, 235/85/16, I think that mounting it atop my rack will take up too much space, and preclude gear storage, Placing it inside the vehicle might be an option, however I was considering the possiblity of a front-mounted spare... it would require slight relocation of my hella's but thats ok... I want to know if anyone has a front mounted spare, and perhaps what could be done to make it happen... What about a hood mounted, setup for a throwback to the 'Ol Series style? -Ryan |

What about a hood mounted, setup for a throwback to the 'Ol Series style? There was a thread about that awhile back. Put the thing on the hood and then decide wich is more important, the spare or being able to see. Front mounted sounds interesting. How bout your winch what to do about that? |

i guess it would depend on where you live, but here in texas i would wonder how that would effect overheating in the summer too..? yeah brian, i remember the photoshop for that thread...the spare on the hood, looked pretty grim. aside from the need to reinforce an aluminum hood for the added stress of the spare sitting up there... mike |

To tall for the hood, blocks visibility, I think Blue has a picture of a tire up on the hood, dosent work. To stupid to mount on the the front unless you have a 72 chevy pickup with plenty of rust. To big to put inside. I think the rack is the only option and even then you should avoid weight on the rack. IMHO Dan |

That is a good idea. I am in the military and we use D110's. We mount one of the spares on the front. There is no problem with visibility and don't worry about overheating. We have never had that promlem in the deep South summers and we drive them very hard. |

Matt, What type of mounting setup do you use on the 110's, Im not using a winch, as of yet, so winch interference is no issue. |

Hi all Don`t forget, if you mount a 235/85/16 on the hood, it takes a massive effort to open. All defenders have a front vent panel below the windscreen, the tyre doesnt make a big difference to visibility. Early RR classics were played about with by the factory, and this was tried, and the bonnet collapsed off road! Best of luck Pete S |

The Defenders have a different front bumper that is more flush with the grill and that made it easier to fit the custom spare mount. It was basically the same idea as a swing away tire carrier in the rear but put up front. It did not swing though. As far as the winch goes, we had them. The carrier was designed so that the tire rode above the fair-lead (spelling?). The only minor problem was sliding your hand to reach the engage/free knob was a tight fit. As far as the over heating, I would switch to a Saudi grill (I think that's what they are called)if you can find one. If you want to try to look at what I am talking about, search for stuff on the 75th Ranger Regiment or try to go to Popular Mechanics web site and back search about 3 years ago. They did a whole spread and have pics. |
