A while back there was a thread on what mileage everybody was getting. I don't want to necessarily rehash this, but I just took my '93 LWB (OME Coils w/about 2 in. lift) on a 5000 km trip from Northern ON to Cape Breton, NS and back in just over a week. It would best be described as pretty mixed driving with freeways (averaged about 110-120 km/hr w/AC on), city/villages, country highways (Cabot Trail - 60-80 km/hr and some pretty steep grades), and a wee bit of trail driving in the Margaree Valley.

Anyway, I used 735.7 litres of fuel and, by my math, it came out to 15.99 miles/US gal (I'm a Yank living in CDN so I still mix my measurements, sorry). My best tank which was on a cool, cloudy day, but I think the tank was not filled completely, was 19.42 miles/US gal. My worst was on a 35C day with AC on coming back thru QC on the Trans Canada (120kms/hr) where I got 13.88 miles/US gal.

Overall, I didn't think that this was too shabby especially considering that my average would have been in the high 16s, if I remove the fill ups I got in Cape Breton and thus eliminate the trail drives and steep, curvy grades. By the way, for anyone who has never been to Cape Breton, do it. Great drives, fantastic people and scenery, and generally pretty decent Rover country. Don't need to go to the UK or Scotland if you can go to CB Island.

I have a '95 RRC-SWB with an Eaton Supercharger. I usually get between 9-14 MPG. Not sure if this is typical for normally aspirated or not....FYI

'99 HSE w/ Bosch. With gentle foot around town, 13-15mpg. Freeway 15-18mpg.

Yeah, I can have a very light right foot if need to be ;). If not so light right foot, subtract 2mpg.

Bill, my 95 LWB makes about 16mpg on the highway at sustained 95/average 85mph. The 96 D1 at that speed makes about 11-12mpg.

Peter:

Interesting comparison. My '94 Disco which was pretty stock never got above 15 mpg, so I found it interesting that my '93 LWB got a wee bit more with the slightly bigger motor, a lift and, I didn't mention it before, but a back end full up with camping gear and general junk, a dicey stepper motor that needed cleaned and a O2 sensor not making good contact in its connector. Of course, with the aero of a brick I supposed the direction of the prevailing winds probably had more to do with it then anything else.

As you may have heard all the sob storys about the cost of fuel here in the uk (aprox $5.40 imp gal) I run my RR on LPG as it cost about half that of unleaded. My RR has 136,ooo mls under its wheels.
On my last trip of around 1.200mls of mixed driving mostly motorway (840 mls)at 80-85mpr an over all return of 14mpg on LPG.
This I feel is not to bad as the same trip was completed in a 98 discovery diesel (300tdi) with 72,000mls 3 months earlyer by myself and a good friend at lower speeds (70 mph) for much the same cost although his car did return 28.6mpg over all.

I wish we could do the LPG conversion here; but when it gets to -40C the gas just does want to come out of the tank. A number of taxis have LPG but all are set up as dual-fuel so they can run petrol during the 6 months of winter.

HI
Yep dual-fuel is what I'm running 110ltr tank.
It's a compromise as the LPG is slow burning and needs a fair amount of advance timeing. Now saving for the gizmo that runs petrol at normal setting and whacks on a hefty lump of advance for LPG, should see an improvement in both mpg and perfomance.I'm losing at least 2mpg running on LPG over petrol and only realy notice short on grunt when towing fairly heavy trailer.

Billr.
Nice motor you got there, did you change the air bags back to coils yourself and i'm most pleased at the choice of flag on your bumper.
I got 1 the same but it's on the back of my RR.

I bought it with the bags but a set of OME springs came with it (it was the dealer's wife's truck and he hadn't had the chance to put them on) and the dealer put them on before I took delivery. Since then though, I've added OME shocks, Red Polybush, and a fair amount of work to get it to this point. It still needs a decent upper tailgate, a hood (inner structure getting rotten) and a few other "minor" bits.

The flag was in honour of my ancestors and to keep me committed to the project (or is that I should be committed for having this project). Plus the picture was shot in a place called Meat Cove in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia so the flag was an appropriate piece of identity.

With all this said, I wish we had the availabilty of afforable, used 110s here as I would trade in a minute. Interested?

Cheers

Russell:

Duh, I can't read. I thought you had a 110 (guess that ltr. mean litres, eh?), until I looked at your profile. Your RRC look pretty nice, as well. I do have a question; how are those LPG tanks mounted when you have a capacity that large? Saddle tanks? Also what kind of brass do they get out of you for a conversion. Here in Ontario you are lucky to find anybody who does that sort of thing and there are no government incentives to do it even though Canada is claiming to be fully supportive of the Kyoto Protocol.

Billr
I was asking about the air bags because I considered buying a LSE (county lwb)from a friend but the car had been showing signs of probs in the ride dept, my first thought was to change it to a simple system like we have on trucks here as I like the ride you get on air. But was put of by all the elctrics. His LSE was also a 93 and suffered rot in the hood structure,It was fitted with a GMC 6.5ltr v8 non turbo diesel which was great but although he worked it hard towing heavy loads (3.5 tons+) all over euorope with no probs I was worried about all that torque on the auto box etc.

I settled on my RR because it was the last of the SE's before air springs and exhaust cats but fitted with plastic fuel tank and other late model bits.
But I also need a new upper tail gate.A new top tail gate from Land Rover is about ($900+US) 600 but you can get a self fit kit in aluminium for around 200.

I to would rather have a 90 or 110 but for the cost of a decent RR only exfarm or heavly used construction dogs are available. But if I think about it I have found that a dicovery is a more practical car for my every day needs over all.
I've been a RR fan since I first saw 1 (aged 12) in 1970 when my school friends dad bought his.
But my neighbour has had 3 defender 90's a RR and now has a 110 td5 crew cab and td5 discovey comercial,2 of my close friends have 300tdi discoveys, my sister has just traded her 300tdi and bought a new td5 dicovery, but my heart won I bought a RR.

The government incentives here are approx 75% cost for cars less than 3 or 5 yrs old so lucked out there.
Yep ltr means litres
Ok twin saddle tanks = around 1,500 =80ltr saddle tanks less ground clearance.
Take out petrol tank fit 2 LPG tanks =60ltr plus small petrol tank =5gal/imp around 2500 you can add saddle tanks also to this for 300+
Tank inside trunk for around 800 usualy 80ltr
Mine is inside across wheel wells, 110ltr tank is tight fit and you lose a lot of space and rear seat don't fold down now so I beg, borrow or steal a trailor for those larger loads.
It was a self fit kit, cost me 500, a day to plan and 3 days to fit. I could do it quicker now I think if I was to do it again, but would prolly put it in to the dealer.

1 = $1.53 something U.S. approx sorry don't CDN

If its of intrest to you there is a local speciaslist Land Rover parts dealer here in town I use, I know he ships nation wide and sure I've heard him say he's shiped new and sometimes used world wide although shipping costs my wipe out any savings over dealers prices for you.
I'll ask for his e-mal address if you wish.
I find him realy helpful. I went to buy new coil springs fom him, he steered me to fit heavy duty UK police coils to the rear and put my rears on the front.Improved the ride and I got approx 1" lift also, although their not OME they do me just fine.
cheers
