A buddy of mine has a '97 Oldsmobile Bravada that has sludge in the coolant. He says that he has flushed the coolant system but the sludge has come back. He's using GM Dex-Cool anti-freeze. I've never heard of sludge in the coolant system before. Anyone have any ideas as to the cause and what to do about it?

Sounds like electrolytic (galvanic) corrosion. Does he have an electric short someplace?

Also, is he using distilled water?

Greg,

I did some checking on the internet and this seems to be a common problem with some GM vehicles. It's related to the coolant system not staying air tight, such as with a bad radiator cap. The coolant turns acidic.
