The 3rd (rebuilt) alternator that I've put in in the last 6 weeks shows "No Charging Volts" on the handheld tester. The last two I've checked after install and they were putting out 13.5 volts but a few days later, voltage output drops to 12 volts or less. It's a 94 D1, 107K. I'm guessing that the rebuilds I'm buying are just shit but is there something else I should check to make sure my Disco's not frying them? I'd hate to shove this alternator down that kid at BAP's throat and have it wind up being something that's wrong with my truck. Is there anything that could be frying these alternators? I've been charging the battery before changing them so the alternators aren't being over-worked from the get go, could I get 3 bad ones off the shelf? -Jim |

I put a couple rebuilt alternators on within a couple of months with the same results. I now have a $560 LR alternator, and a lighter wallet. No probs. since. |

well I would say be careful where you buy rebuilds I use and have used rebuilds from morton grove auto electric forever and have never gotten a bad one, plus they have made me some very special ones for different vehichles that have sky high output or have been waterproofed...yes waterproofed starters and alternators! it all depends where they come from and who rebuilt them 3 bad ones in a row...you bet if they all where rebuilt with the same crappy components by the same less then qualified rebuilder....yes 3 bad ones in a row is very possible.

95 D1 with 120kmiles. Had alt rebuilt locally. Bad diode back drain trouble for a year and ordered a Bosch rebuilt from Nathan. Started charging 15 v plus as soon as I installed and in a few miles it tripped out and quit charging. Nathan replaced it right away. Second one worked fine for a few months. Now I'm seeing fluctuations in the tach needle worse at high rpm and worse when hotter. Since tach drives out of the alternator I'm worried my built-in regulator is about to fry. If Bosch can't rebuild for decent service- who can? |
