DAMN YOU LUCAS!

My brake lights suddenly stopped working yesterday! I'm going crazy trying to figure it out. I did a seach in the tech section and I'm guessing it's the brake switch.

Does anyone have any idea where it is and how I can test it? Any pics or diagrams? I need to get this straightened out before someone rear-ends me or I get a ticket. I have an inspection coming up soon too.

Here's what I know:
- Fuse #1 is good
- Fuses #12 and #13 are good
- Third brake light in window works
- Directionals work
- Bulbs are good (replaced them)
- The plastic sidepanel in the driver's footwell near the hood release has an edge that will cut your thumb to the bone - trust me.

I'm as diehard as the rest of you here, but I'm starting to think about a new pickup. This is getting crazy. Between my two DI's I have more aggravation than I can handle.

Any advice on locating/testing/replacing the brake switch may pull me out of my anti-Rover funk.

TIA,
Chuckster

Just went through this, Chuck, and it ended up being (Pass. Side) socket that was too loose -- bulb was rattling around a little, and (Driver's Side) loose wiring harness. Those things rattle just a little bit and the lights won't work, even with everything else "in the green"...it cost me about $100 to have diagnosed and fixed by the dealer (I know, I know)...

Good luck!

If you are able to place the truck into gear, it is not likely to be the switch, but as Andrew said, a bad connection somewhere else. I have found the tail lights on Discos to be very finicky and not at all easily accessible.

Thanks guys, yes... I forgot to mention that the truck WILL go into gear and drive.

So if the switch craps out, the truck won't go into gear - is that correct?

Hey all,

Found it - I pulled both sockets and shook them a little and they lit up. What are the chances of both loosening up at the same time... strange! Freakin Lucas!

Anyway, I've ordered new sockets... many thanks to those who helped out, you guys rock.

Good news that you found out what the poblem was and shared it with us. Seems simple now huh.
I've read on these LR posts to check grounds for faults. Everyone looks for the Hot wire. but electricity needs a way back to ground to connect a circuit.
Atlantic British has some good basic points on this subject in the 'tech tips" section of there webpage If your car started ( automatic I would assume?), and your third brake light was working I wouid say that you were doing OK.
Happy 4th of July.....Aloha, Lou

Yup, brake lights are fine. Now I just have to fix the door locks, the remotes, both sunroofs, both leaking alpine windows, the leaking power steering lines, the broken seat belt, the dead hydraulic step piston and the foggy AC and I'm all set!!!

Check this one out, there is a new stage to my window gremlins:

-Press driver's window button down
-Driver's window goes down
-When window finishes going down, passenger window goes down
NEW STAGE-when passenger window finishes going down, it changes the disc in the CD player!

Neat, huh? I think it was designed to do that! (Tongue firmly in cheek.)

PS... the thumb is healing nicely.

Thanks for the help folks!
