I did the billstien on all 4 corners last month, and started to hear some rattling around yesterday

It got worse and worse, so i openend the hood to find the top washe that sandwiches the top bushing n the bottom of the engine copartment and the bushing pushed up over the nut. I used the hardware that was included, but it was so weak.

The washer, actually pushed up and through the nut on the top of the shock...so now the washer that once had a hole in it, has a perfect strecthed out hex shape.

the noice i was hearing was the shock ratti]ling around, duh!

so now what? was it faulty materials, or did i do something wrong? Overtighten the top shock bolt?

I had a shock do this not long after I got my truck. I replaced it several time and it kept happening. When I replaced the entire shock with OME it never happened agin. Was it a defective shock, I don't know. But makes you think so.

Joshua,

I've had Bilsteins on my Disco since I got it, and it never happened to me. In fact, I have never had a problem with the fasteners included with Bilstein shocks, on a decent number of sets. I believe the nut wasn't tight in the first place, allowing the shock to flop up and down in the hole.

Joshua - did you install the steel sleeves that came with the shocks? The sleeve should actually be what rides on the ID of the shock tower hole and the bushings slide over the sleeve.

The sleeve also functions to limit the amount you can torque the upper nut down to avoid overcompressing the bushings.

Guys thanks a ton...I guess. I mean, I went out there and tightened the hell out of the nut, untill i couldnt do it anymore.

Maybe i just didnt have it tightened enough to begin with?

I replaced the now, no exsistant top washer with 2 steel rigs I piced up at a tractor supply store.

Rovers North has 2 new hardware sets on it way, but at least I can drive now.

so, just out of curiosity, can you tight the top bots too tight? do i need to tourqe them?

Like i said, i held the flat tip with a set of vice grips and tightened the nut down untill it woudlnt go anymore, and it pancaked the hell out of teh bushing

any more ideas?

no, you shouldn't really overtorque them. technically, they have a little milled thing at the tip of the shock threads (something like 6mm or 1/4" across) that you're supposed to hold with an open-end wrench.

what i think could have happened is one of the washers went in crooked, and jammed on the threads before getting fully seated. a few thousand jerks on the shock, and it loosened up and fell into its place, creating some slop.

my right front shock is loose and rattles like this too. i didn't replace it or anything i bought it that way. I'm pretty sure these are the original shocks. how could it have loosened up this much? Is it due to spring sag? should i just tighten it up?

my little bit of advice (not to fix this situation, but to help with others), is to buy a set of wrenches and not use the vice grips for holding nuts and such. they can do a bad job on the flats of nuts and bolts and make the next repair more difficult. watch the sunday paper, if you are on a budget, for a sale and at least get something designed for "wrenching."
