FYI: I took my '99 DII into my local LR dealer yesterday to find out the cause of the "Service Engine Soon" light (amber) coming on. Following their checkout, they've decided to replace the entire engine wiring harness as they believe that oil has seeped into the harness and is causing intermittant shorts which in turn are producing a whole range of fault codes. I'll see my truck back in about a week...

My bro-in-law has a 99RR 4.0 that's been having problems with a leaky sunroof. He's been pretty 'understanding' with the quirks of his RR but now the service engine soon came up as well. He took it to the dealer and was seriously considering trading it for an 03 Disco. They gave him a brand spanking new 03 Disco with 28 miles on it as a loaner. He was excited and said if he liked this, he will trade the RR. He hops in to this brand new disco and pulls towards the dealership exit when the Service Engine Soon light came up!

it is probably the oxygen sensors. I have a disco II (99) with the light on also, but I have not taken it to the dealership since is 4 hours away. If I were you I'd make sure that indeed that is the problem. sometimes the dealership will exagerate the problem. I intent to have the computer check each oxygen sensor and then replace them my self. when I took it to the local auto zone, the reader says bank 1 and 2 too lean!! I exactly do not know how it works, but it is related to the oxygen/gas mixture being too lean and throws the code. check it out. sensors are around $69 at oxygensensor.com
