92' RR: I was on a downhill trail last night and my ABS kept kicking in, I found it bothersome. Can I just pull a fuse or relay to disable it for off-road? If I do will I get a wacky code and have to re-set stuff or can I just plug the relay or fuse back in when I hit the road?

Just wait awhile, it will eventually fail and then, all you will have to worry about is the goofy blinking light.

LOL, thanks Paul! Guess I'll just pull the bulb then.

The funny thing is that the most beat-up Rangie I work on is the only one with functioning ABS. I have a client who has the most beautiful SWB with only about 60K on it, yet the ABS doesn't work. The one that does have functioning ABS has a gazillion miles, a rotted out lift gate, etc. but it has working electric seats and ABS.

Peace,
Paul

On the 93 LWB I had you couldn't do much becuase the ABS system and brake system are integrated with each other so if ABS is disconnected - brakes don't work to well. I'm assuming the system would be the same on a 92. I had my pump go out on the trail and it was quite interesting getting back to the pavement, not something I would ever want to do again.

Jay is 100% correct -

the RR ABS system is active unlike the passive Disco system. When you press the brake pedal, you are only physically sending hydraulic pressure to one set of pistons the front calipers. The remaining set of front pistons and the single set of pistons on the rear brakes are the "power" circuit and are ONLY pressurized by the combinations of the ABS pump and accumulator. So instead of 6 pistons working for you, you only have 2 - NOT GOOD. This is a limp home mode only.

Personally I think the RR brake system is great - some of the best brakes I've had on any vehicle - but only if they are functioning 100% and there is alot to go wrong.

BTW - this applies to and RR Classic system 90-95 - not sure about NBS RR's.

You can indeed disable the ABS system on a RRC without losing your braking. I've done it on my own truck and have been running that way for over a year.

P-

I want to try my 92' RR without ABS and then be able to enable it immediately afterwards. Essentially I want to try the same trail under both conditions. What fuse/relay did you pull if any to disable it?

Thanks for all the information everyone!

Perrone - you're right, you can disable just the ABS, but alot of people confuse that with shutting off the entire pump or pressure switch. Just wanted to clarify that with folks who may compare it to the Disco system.

same here i pulled the fuse for the abs sensors and have been running like this for over 8 months but what i'm not sure about is bill's reply on only having 2 pistons on the fron caliper instead of 6 working because i pulled the fuse out? Do I have full braking power the way i'm driving right now ? tks

All 6 of my pistons are working. And it's a relay you pull. I hate to be an ass, but I really don't want to be responsible for anyones death, so I won't advocate doing this mod. Suffice it to say there are only a few ABS relays. Find an empty parking lot (like I did) until you get it right.

If you pull the fuse, you will indeed be working with far less braking, which is why I left the fuses intact.
