I have this noise that has been happening for a while but it only occured occasionally and is now happening more often. It's hard to describe, but it's a winding noise from the front-end. At idle, it doesn't occur and it happens when I start it first thing in the morning and put it in gear. It only happens when the Disco is moving. As the Disco increases in speed, it gets higher-pitched and then disappears. It only lasts a couple of seconds. It appears that the Disco is laboring a little while this noise happens but is fine when it's gone. It won't occur again until I park the car for a while (overnight) and even then, it's not regular. I noticed that it is happening occasionally after a long highway drive now when I'm moving at a slower speed in the city. It appears to come and go but it's not happening very often. What can it be and can I fix this myself with some grease somewhere? Sounds like bearings but I don't know where. Thanks for any help, Santo 98 Disco LSE |

Could it be the main fan you are hearing? Mine does the same, especially now that it's getting hot, it sounds like a small prop plane! Yes, seems to take some power away from the engine, too. I understand that Discos have a viscous clutch to the fan blades to the engine, to make the fan spin at full speed at idle, and not so fast as the engine speeds up... seems to also be engine temperature related, too, happens more when the engine is hot. Does anyone know if this is "normal" operation? |

I hope it is normal, mine does it all the time. about 15 seconds on normal start up, longer on 70+ degree days. And especially on 85+ days when towing or driving slow - in town or off-road. I think you are right about it being a viscus clutch. Meaning you have no control over it, it just goes on for extra air cooling when it is needed.

There's an air pump in the right rear corner of the engine compartment. It runs for a minute or so after startup, I'm guessing to blow off whatever fumes have formed in the evaporation control system. Might be this - listen in that area the next time you start your truck. |

Mine does this as well and has done it ever since I bought it new. So I guess it's normal. |
