I am preparing my D2 for Moab and Hole in the Rock. I was told that I need to protect my rear bumper because it is what will be taking the most hits. What can I do to protect it? Are there any D2 rear bumper repacements that will take the rocks?

(I don't know if this limits my options?: I have the integral class III trailer hitch receiver)

Thanks, Jamie

The three D2 rear bumper options that I know of are:
1) Trek Outfitters
2) SafariGard
3) Greg Davis

Of the three, I like the ones from Greg Davis. He is a DiscoWeb member and sells bumpers. I'll let him chime in here.

The Trek Outfitters bumper is the only one I know of that does not require cutting of the rear quarter panels.

Jamie, the biggest decision you'll have to make is wether or not you're willing to trim your rear quarters. Personally, I feel it's the only way to get decent clearance back there.

If you're interested in one of my rear bumpers (which DO require trimming), shoot me an e-mail.

And thanks for the plug Eugene.

hey greg,

i have been looking at yours and an unplugged other. do you deviate any at all in your design, or are you cut and jigged and only produce one style? the change i am thinking about is very minor, so if it possible, i can talk to you off board about it.

sorry to be a vulture on your thread, jamie.

Mike, e-mail me with your questions. If it's doable, I'm game.

Greg, That was a nice shot of your rear bumper on the cover of the "RoversNorth" newpaper. PS what happened to the cool jerry can/tire carrier you had.

If you go with Greg's bumper and get rid of the stock hitch set up, you will want to pick up a gas tank skid. Due to the change in departure angles, the rear most section of the tank is exposed to pretty much everything. The below pic shows my truck with Greg's bumper and a modified Trek Outfitters gas tank skid.. in Moab.

You can also see the scuff marks on the bumper so that will give you an idea what gets rubbed a bit.

good note marc,

i was just under the truck moments ago looking at the new issues a moded bumper would create. as noted above, i am sporting the lrna (which i think may really be a southdown?) fuel tank skid. i was trying to figure out a good mod for that.

thanks,

mike

Thanks Jim. I scrapped that carrier. I just didn't like the looks of it. Hopefully I'll get version 2.0 done soon.

Thanks guys, very much.

Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to this subject with all the stuff I am trying to figure out. I am managing to totally confuse myself trying to learn about "under truck stuff". Since I have finally figured out road psi for my tires, time to get back to other issues.

Eugene, I will check out all 3 rear bumper options that you listed.

Marc, thanks for the picture, that helped.

Mike, did you figure out new issues created with lrna fuel tank skid and modified rear bumper? I have not installed any of the skid plates yet, so that info would be much appreciated.

I am not crazy about the idea of losing my hitch or starting to cut my truck up, but...

Greg, I just sent you an email for info on your rear bumper.

Thanks again, Jamie

hey jamie...

i have been talking to greg (i have done business with him before and i will say that i think he is a good man) and we have put together a little project rear bumper i think i will like. it is basically his standard bumper (so it will *relocate* the trailer hitch)(and allow you to keep your pink shackle...!) with a little more depth along the top deck to give me more to stand on for loading bikes and boats on my roof. so from the rocks perspective, it will be the same, from my foots perspective, it will be wider and more stable for me. it *will* involve trimming the lower rear quarter panels, but in all reality, it was something i was planning on doing eventually anyway. if you look at your truck, it will involve cutting the section that is behind the plastic trim panel that runs from the rear tire to the bumper. not much...

about the skid...it looks like i may just shorten and reinforce the plate at the rear. it would involve takeing the stock hitch off (since the bumper already comes with one) and that is where you gain quite a bit of additional clearance. the hitch acts as a bit of a tank protector, which is why marc advises getting a plate. but the lrna one now becomes too long. so shorter, and reinforced. should be easy, but i will have to see it all together before i know exactly...kinda like the bumper/recovery point thing...;)

Mike,

Thank you. Keep me posted. I am very interested in what you find out. I am totally confused about the underside of my rover. However, the same thing happened when I started on the outside of rover, and I eventually figured it out. Perhaps we should join up to ask for group discount since we seem to be doing the same stuff!

Gee Whiz, I have never tried to get A BOAT on my roof. I can't say I have ever seen a boat on a rover, or even a kayak. Come to think of it, I don't think I have even seen anything on a rover or even a dirty rover. Many posers here, and lately Hummers seem to be popping up everywhere. No offense intended to anyone that likes them, but I just don't get the purpose of having one of those?

I appalled many people when I started off roading, I got the nuttiest comments like - you are going to take THAT off road (hello - I thought that is what they were made for!). After my first MUDDY off road event, it was difficult to tell what color my rover was under all the mud. Dealership told me it could safely stay on for one week without staining. I kept it on the entire week! I was so PROUD of my mud! When I received unkind comments, I told people that I EARNED that mud!!

No one bugs me anymore, they just look at me very strangely. Oh well. Maybe they just decided that I lost my mind? Oh Well. Perhaps I have, but it sure is fun!! Oh Well.

We have had some stormy flooding weather here in the last few weeks. I gotta tell you, it is a pretty darn good feeling knowing that I am capable of going in with my rover and helping people out in emergencies. I am trying to find organizations in my area that keep names on file for that purpose so they could call me in emergencies.

Thanks AGAIN, Jamie

well...

maybe not a *real* boat...;) my buddies and i seem to be locked in a "b" sport theme. so bikes are obviously bicycles, boats would be kayaks or canoes, bouldering is a low height (but very difficult) form of climbing, and beer, well, beer is just beer.

http://homepage.mac.com/taciturnal/PhotoAlbum1.html

this is a doofie little page i posted some photos on to show a long lost friend my way of putting kayaks on rover without having to do too big of toss on top of the truck. a bigger toss now that tires and springs are on. i have had bikes and "boats" up at the same time, but have no photos...

greg gave me 4 week turn around for the bumper, but when i get it in and installed, i will send you some photos of the mod to the tank skid. you can decide if it will work for you...

Thanks, I will go look at your homepage, AFTER I do my reading to learn on Dweb!

4 week turnaround? Gee whiz, I had better get going on deciding what I am going to do. I received email from Greg, but very busy day - no time to respond yet...

His email said that he ships them out in bare steel so that it can be painted locally to ensure match on rover. You know what that means don't you??? I could spray paint it neon florescent pink! But then it would only match my shackle and shackle receiver!

Really though, I'd just do black.

I like the fact that I would still have a hitch, it seems like a while back someone told me that if I replaced rear bumper for off road bumper that I would lose my hitch. I need it - I carry my bikes on hitch mounted LR bike rack, but then I have to take my pink shackle out :-(

I don't think I could ever get bikes up on top!
Are you going to do the cutting of your bumper yourself and install your bumper yourself?

yeah...i will cut needed stuff myself. just remember to allow twice as much time as you think it will take to do a job and then you will have almost enought time to do it right. if someone is going to cut on the body of my rover, it is going to be me.

pink, huh...? well that is a damn fine choice! there are some aftermarket bumpers that keep the stock hitch, but it is the stock hitch that usually drags. so if you spend money and keep the stock hitch, what have you really gained? i am pretty stoaked about greg's bumper, but you seem to do a good job with your research. keep it up and make the best decision for you.

i think you are doing a fine job, jamie...keep up the investigation and you will end up with a truck that does what you need it to do and not one that does what someone else thinks your truck should be.

Just so people don't think I'm trying to convince people to paint their bumpers goofey colors, I meant it allows you to match it to any other accessories. When I had my bumper powder coated, there were about 15-20 different shades of black, along with different amounts of gloss or satin.

For instance, an Adventure rack has a color that is apporximately 30% gloss, whereas RoverTym bumpers have more of a flat finish. By shipping in bare metal, you can match it to whatever you have.

Nothing worse than having 3 or 4 different shades of the same color on your rig.

Plus, I don't have to worry about it getting scratched during shipping.

Greg,

Uh oh! I did not mean to offend you...

The "pink thing" is a silly source of humor thing for me, since I am putting all this "boy stuff" on my truck. I prime my recovery gear, and then spray paint it neon florescent pink. It is just a goofy thing and fun because everyone teases me about it. Since I have a totally ridiculous sense of humor it is great source of humor and much silly fun.

Sorry, I just could not resist the giggles (thinking pink) at the thought of having a choice of paint color! :-) Even I could NOT cope with a pink bumper!!!

I'm definitely sticking with black for rear bumper. There are that many shades of black????

Hope to get in touch with you soon for more bumper info - I have houseguests thru next Sunday, so schedule has been hectic (to say the least!)

Thanks, Jamie

Jamie, no offense taken. Hence the smiley face in my post. It takes alot to upset me, especially over the internet.

See, there's that face again!
