I have a power steering fluid leak. It's pretty noticeable, I am alays low on P.S. fluid. I thought it was coming from the hose connector under the reservoir, but I have decided that it probably is not. Any specific things (seals, etc.) I should check? Also, you know the big wheel that turns the serpentine belt, whatever it's called...there seems to be an oil leak where it exits the block. Not too bad, though I'm never low on oil. Thanks, Daniel |

Oh, one other thing...just so this is all on the same thread (I'm a lazy bastard) . I have been noticing a click when I hit the brakes. It's very faint and everything else is normal...no feeling it in the pedal or anything else. Any ideas. Thanks, -D |

common for the hose to leak at the reservoir, replace the pipe clamps with the conventional type degrease the whole area with purple power or something like that. dry it and then do this. turn the wheel all the way left or right and hold it there it will put some strees on the components and show a the leak. i have experienced leaks from the top seal (looks like a squ cap on top of the box) and out of the bottom shaft. if you dont see the leak it's not leaking all that bad yet. mine would go thru a thing of fluid in two days. i've seen a dye kit at the auto parts store that you add to the fluid then let it leak and inspect with a black light. if should pin point the leaks. personaly it was easy to spot the leak with the naked eye after i degreases the area. rd

I hope that purple power stuff works. I've got some serious buildup down there. If I do have leaks at either place, is there an easy fix, or will I need a whole new pump? -D

Daniel On mine it was a pin hole that could only be seen when someone had the wheel turned all the way. Clean it well and have someone help you. Max |

Rob, What do you mean by "squ cap"? How did you repair your leak in each case? -D |

The click sounds like the break relay under the dash. Normal. The oil gathered at the "Big Wheel" sounds like a front main seal. Not too hard to fix on a rover. |

I know, sometimes I have to laugh at my own lack of "technical knowledge", but I usually manage to stumble through most things. How would one change the main seal? Also, I just changed the brake relay switch... (all by myself might I add) and this is different. It is a new sound that only happens the first time I press the brakes on a stop. If I pump the brakes it doesn't usually happen again. I know it is from somewhere outside the truck because I can only hear it with the window down. What would a loose caliper or brake pad sound like? Max, How did you repair your leak? Thanks all, -D

"squ cap" i mean square cap if you open the hood and look down it's the part of the box you see the pipes going into. any of the nontoxic degreaseres should get the area clean and dry enough to see the leak. i would not suggest that you change the seals yourself. too much to do for a novice. it will take a good many hours to get the box in and out. if you take it out change the seals and put it in and it leaks you might want to kill someone. have you tried lucas stop leak yet? and how long does it take to empty the resevoir? rd

Rob, About once a week I refil the reservoir. I did have some stop leak in there come to think of it and it was better, but that was when I first bought the truck. Sounds like a pretty expensive job to have a pro repair the seals, and you're right. If I "fix" it and it still leaks there will be hell to pay. How long should it take someone who knows what they're doing? The Rover guy I use charges $80.00 an hour. For that I'll likely take it to the dealer. Thanks, Daniel |
