What came out of there was like black syrup .. the whole thing was a mess. I spent an hour just getting them half clean so I could see the bolts. Hope I didn't get too much crap in there once I finally got them out. Anyhow, the goo that came out was like black syrup .. I maybe got 250-300ml on each side. Was actually glad to see that .. at least something was in there even if it was just sludge. Oh well, my first project ... ( heh !) Each side took about 400 mls before it weeped out the sight hole .. One question, I realized I didn't clean the threads when sticking the bolts back in on the swivel end. There was probably a bit of oil on them ... is this ok? Or will they rust? Or is it better so they don't rust? Should I take them off again and clean the oil up better? Kind of hard to do on the bottom one .. anyhow... Now the shocks are next, along with those leaky power steering hoses ...

Glad you did it yourself. Don't worry too much about the bolts or filler plugs. Sounds like you had LR one-shot CV lube in there - the quantity is very small and it is very dark. To be sure, you could drain and refill again in about 500 miles to get more of the old out. Bill |

Thanks for the response. I was starting to think thats what might be in there. I noticed this morning that the driver's side one (which was the dirtiest to begin with) seems to be weeping a bit at the bottom of the swivel ball. Looks like the nice fresh oil I put in there. I may have to go back to the GOO! The real bad thing must have been that the 1-shot goo was probably oozing out too. That inner seal must be shot. Not sure if I can handle that one myself ... I'll see how it goes and then maybe go back to the goo. So 250MLs is about as much goo as you need to put in? I might just try regular CV joint grease but I wasn't sure how much to squeeze in.

Ok, i think I'm going to give this a shot: http://www.cruzers.com/~twakeman/LR/LRhubseal.htm "Coat the surface of the hub where the outside of the seal will rest with a thin coating of a good sealant. Carefully seat the seal into the hub with the cut at the top." It says a thin coating of a good sealant .. would this just mean smearing some oil on it? Or is there something else I would want to use?

I really don't recommend doing it that way - why cut a seal that has a job to do and offer anotehr leak path. It is not that huge a job to do it correctly and it gives the opportunity to get familiar with all the other bits. Also, you'd be able to repack wheel bearings and check their condition, replace stub axle seals, etc. Just my POV. Bill |
