Well I was planning to go to the Rover Rendezvous in Big Bear later this month but not sure now. Here's my problem:

Last Friday drove my 89 RRC around and did some work on (removed headliner) and pulled back in garage.

Saturday went to run truck over and get smog check done-cranked but did not start or even stumble.

Checked for spark-no probs-has spark.

Check for gas-no gas. I thought maybe I had blown #18 fuse or somehow tripped inertia switch-both OK. Since I had run a hose over sunroof and found it leaking before pulling in garage I thought maybe I had burned pump relay or MFI relay due to moisture. I had a couple new bosch relays (the silver w/red stripe) ones and installed them-still no gas.

I checked for power terminal 87 of pump relay and got the 1 second of 11.8 volts as per manual.

Checked at fuel pump connection (behind rear wheel drivers side) and got 1 second of 11.8 volts when key turned on. No gas.

Pulled fuel hose at filter and cranked engine-no gas.

Fuel pump is only two years old-installed with new tank under recall. No indication of low fuel pressure prior so I'm doubting this is prob. However I'm going to run 12 volts directly to pump and see if works-haven't done it yet.

Could my ECU be toast?

One other oddity-when I initially started cranking engine (engine completely cold-hadn't run for 24 hours) the electric AC condensor fans kicked on (remember fan relay is under pass seat next to ECU and fuel pump relay and MFI relay) and wouldn't stop till I pulled battery cables.

Any ideas???

Thanks-
GregH

i think it's simply the fuel pump again.

Greg, please post any updates.

My 89 is a bitch to start after it's been sitting idle for a week or so. Suspect fuel pump - the old filter was badly clogged, so the pump may be half-way south.

Don't forget to check the pickup screen inside the tank for cloggage (word?). This often gets overlooked. I just bought a fuel pump for a caddy seville from Autozone for $80 (lifetime warr). It was a simple plug and play.

Update:

Applied 12 volts to pump-no gas.

However, not even a spark from battery when power applied to pump leads. That tells me wires supplying power to pump are likely broken or blown. It still seems bizarre to me that it would go catastrophic after driving into garage and parking-maybe my suspicion re: water ingress at pass seat caused power surge to pump circuit??

Ordering 89 Seville pump tomorrow- If I'm gonna go to all the work of pulling tank I'm going to replace pump...

No Rob-I'm not going to butcher my load space-that would make it too easy!! :-)

greg. it doesnt have to be butchered... hehe, besides i did so the next time it goes and i am in BFE it's already taken care of.

are you sure that relay under the passenger seat is ok, maybe replace it too since it's cheap.

check thecord running from, it to the tank too.

Out of curiosity, why did you use water around your sunroof. Seems like a recipe for disaster to me. Water and electrics just don't mix.

Rob-

I replaced pump relay and MFI relay with new ones. Continuity of wire checks out between relay, fuse, inertia switch and pump.

Aaron-

My RRC is not a daily driver and rarely sees rain and doesn't get washed often either :-). I'm replacing headliner and wanted to check sunroof seals for leakage before I re-installed new headliner so as to prevent water damage.

My 6 year old was "watering" the Rover while I sat inside looking for leaks. There are 4 clear plastic drain tubes surrounding sunroof and I was watching them to check for blockage and to see if/how much seal was leaking. (replacing both F/R parts of seal is approx $300!)

It's apparent that my rear seal needs replacing and there's blockage inside my sunroof retract area as no water drained through back drain hoses but was draining front hoses. Depending on levelness of vehicle about a 1/2 cup to a cup of water spilled over drain channels onto pass seat-I thought I wiped it all up and didn't think any got on electrics but now I'm wondering?

How would you check sunroof seals for leaks unless controlled use of water? Waiting for rainy day would be too late.

Update-

Pump leads at connection where it enters tank and connects from round black 90 degree angle connector to white connector inside tank was burned and charred! Rather scary.

Pump was apparently old and not replaced with tank under recall.

Am taking back '89 Seville pump and ordering complete OEM pump kit with leads etc.

Update-

Installed complete genuine pump kit from AB-runs great!

Rob-
Pulling tank was not bad. Took about 15 minutes to drain tank (raised rear to drain into 20L NATO cans) and about 30 minutes to pull tank-only 4 bolts and a few hoses to disconnect.

Took about 1 1/2 hours to install new pump assembly and reinstall tank, add gas, check for leaks, etc.
