Alright, so I've got everything opened up, new bearings packed, old races out, new races in, but this damn oil seal.... I didn't look at it hard enough when I took the old one out. How deep does it set in there? I'm trying to salvage my day and get to work so any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. JR |

John the seal ( the outer most part) sits flush with the top lip of whatever the correct term is your putting it into. This will allow the part of the seal to stick out some, when you slide it on. just make sure the outer most part of the hub seal is flush with the actual hub, and just slide the puppy on josh |

So when it says "fit to depth of 4mm" you do not do this? Set the seal till it will not go any farther. It will be recessed 4mm. Use a big socket or pipe to set it all the way down. |

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I ended up recessing it about 4mm on one, the other I left flush (it gets pushed in when you reseat the hub). JR |

It depends upon which seal one is using. If you are using the RTC 3511, it has a flange that limits insertion depth. If one is using the newer gasket, it is to be recessed 4 m/m. If one does not recess the seal, you run the risk of the seal being distorted by contact on the face of the seal, rather than the surface where the rotating member is intended to contact the seal. Fortunately, this is a part of the vehicle that if you are not wading, you are unlikely to suffer any ill consequences due to improper installation. |
