So...

I didn't have a lug wrench for my DI, so I ordered one from AB. It came in the mail yesterday, and I took it outside to try it out. Fortunately, I haven't needed it in the past, but I figured I'd better have one.

I tried it out and it doesn't seem to fit. ?? I know the nuts on the DI are some sort of protective cap, but how do they work?

Shouldn't my new lug wrench fit on these as well as the true lug nuts underneath?

Baffled, and it's too damn hot out here for me to go mess with it right now. I've practically rebuilt this truck by now and I can't figure out the damn lug wrench/nuts... how embarrassing! I'm an idiot.

Looks like the same same lugwrench that came w/ our D1. It will bend on you at the first use, even if you use the jack handle as an extension. The "protective covers" are actually part of the lug itself and yes, the lugwrench should fit over it. I went down to our local NAPA and bought an old school 4 way tire iron for my D90 and that's the only thing I use on any of our Rovers.

Get rid of those lousy stainless cap lugnuts and get the solid steel ones, don't look as pretty but are hell of alot better, you can probably find a used set somewhere for cheap.

I'm hoping to switch over to black steelies soon anyway, so I'll be going with standard lugnuts...

Hammer it on they will fit. The wrench has new sharp corners and chances are your lug nuts are rounded a little. Go to a tractor supply and buy one. They are heavy duty you can put a cheater bar on and jump on it and they won't bend. They are about $25 and money well spent.

Keep the stainless caps on the lugs so you can sell them later,

If you want to keep them anyways, this setup works fine.

Buy a cheap torque wrench or breaker bar (cheaper), in 1/4 inch drive, as well as a 27mm socket and a 4 inch extender.

The caps are exactly slightly smaller that 27mm in width from side to side, so the socket fits like a glove. The breaker bar or torque wrench is to get that 103 ft/lbs of torque on those lugs, and the extender keeps you from scratching up your alloys or bumping anything else.

This setup is far better than the lug wrench if you ask me, and theres no worry of under-torquing the lugs with the wrench.

Depending on how new your car is, the lugs may have expanded more than you think. a 28 mm socket has to be forced on with some pressure to fit. I bought a brand new socket and its exacly 27 mm, so I have to carry both.

Go to lowes or your local hardware store, explain that you dont know what size you need for your tires, and ask them if you can take a 27 and a 28 out there to test fit. Bring a pair of pliers to take the socket off the lugnut, cause it'll get stuck most likely.

Are you sure about 1/4 drive?
I wouldn`t stand on a 1/4 drive breaker bar, and it is Snap-on, before you all get excited out there in tool dream land!
I think you mean 3/4 drive!

Thanks guys... with all the tools I have you'd think I'd have those sockets, but I don't. I'll pick em up. Anybody selling any black steelies for a DI???

Yes Peter, I wondered about that 1/4" drive too!

I carry 1 1/16 and 27mm...and find that the former works best those caps are not accurately sized.
As for Steelies, nothing better (wot me biased?)than either the wheel on the NAS 110, or the Wolf wheel, which is a bunch cheaper (about $80 each-RN)
You can use the stock alloy lugnuts but they look silly.

I appologise, as some of you probably have noticed, I am slightly dyslexic (or however the hell it is spelled).

That's why I usually pay such particular attention to my grammer, as without said care, my writings would make absolutely no sense. :-)

But yes, 3/4 inch is what I thought I was typing. I never understood why these keys have to be so damn close together.

No worries, I had visions of people going out and buying a 1/4 breaker bar and being somewhat disappointed.
I doubt my snap on bar is 6" long, not really sure why I even have it, I hardly use it. This happens when the Snap-on man pulls up, you all pile out and then you leave your brain in your tool box. So many nice shiny tools, oooooohhhhhh, I can buy that over how many weeks!
