I think a saw a related post in the past, but can't find it now.

Any ideas on getting rid of the "rattles" in the rear door of my D1? When I go over bumps in the road it sounds like the door isn't shut all the way (yes... I checked to confirm that it was shut :-)) Washboard roads are the worst. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a DII and recently I had a rattle caused by my subwoofer in the back door. It was driving me crazy so I decided to remove the inside door panel and see if I could resolve it with some dynamat. (A bit of advice: when removing the snap screws be very careful because the heads have a tendancy to break off and then you are out of luck. I used a very wide flat wood chisel to slip it beneath the door and the panel and gently pry the panel back.) Anyway, I noticed that there was a snap stud right in the middle of the door that was not snapped into the supplied hole in the door. This was because there is a plastic sheet that covers a large hole in the inside of the back door. After making a small X where the hole was and snapping the stud in place I have had no more rattles. This was a relief considering I like to play my music loud and could hear it rattling over the music.

I dont know if this will help you, but I have heard that there are few if any difference between the DI and DII back doors.

new (or adjust) wedge & adjust the catch

wedge is the trapezoidal-shaped piece of black plastic, the catch is the metal piece that surrounds the wedge when door is closed. The wedge wears down and needs to be replaced, but you may eliminate rattles by simply adjusting wedge & catch.

Byron,
All doors on your disco latch onto a cylinder rod that the doors hook into. This cylinder can be adjusted by loosing it up with a wrench, and moving it backwards or forwards. Just loosen up the rod and move it back slightly, don't go overboard as the door might shut tight and you'll have problems unlocking it, just move it enought and test it. When your done make sure you tighten the cylinder rod really good and you should be good to go.

if it's a D1, your wedge is worn, guaranteed

by the way, yesterday I saw a guy driving down the road with a mattress hanging out the back of his D2 - his rear door was wide open and he's just cruisin along at 50 mph...LOL, he's going to have some rear door issues

Thanks for the tips. I'll give them a try and see how it goes. Sounds like a simple fix for a really annoying noise.

Blue - That's awesome about the mattress! That's what roof racks are for. I've carried everything imaginable on my roof rack... couches, mattress/box spring set, antique hall stand, tampoline, 3 Christmas trees, etc. I was wondering if my door problems were aggrevated by standing on my rear ladder so many times to secure the load on the roof. Anyway, thanks for the tip.

Byron,
I have a DI and had a thread a while back and some people suggested playing with the hinges and loosening and adjusting them and retightening them. I worked around with it and adjusted the latch, still has a small squeky rattle but not nearly as bad. But i'm fixing to replace the wedge and get the noise completely gone.

I have the same problem on bumpy roads. At first I noticed the wheel nuts holding the spare tyre on to the door were loose! Having tightened those and still with a rattle, I noticed that the wedge was very worn. No problem, except Land Rover South Africa have decided to obsolete the wedge as a spare part! I have a 96 Disco - please let me know where I can get one, that they will mail to me in SA!!

David,
Try http://www.atlanticbritish.com. They carry the wedge and ship internationally. Good luck.
