I just dropped my 97 Disco off at the Mechanic to have the braking system (abs, pads, calipers) checked out. I was hearing a thunk/"CLud" sound whenever I applied the brakes.... He called me and said that the rear coupler needed to be replaced. What is it? What does it do? I cant seem to find anything from searching these boards.

he might be talking about the rotoflex? The rubber u/joint thing at the end of the driveshaft. They wear out and crack/dryrot...and eventually come apart. My part cost me I think $70 or $80.

Robert,

Was that thunk/"CLud" sound when you let up on the brakes or when you stamped down on the brakes? I've heard such a sound, albeit small, upon taking one's foot OFF the brake.. hmm.

Not necessarily easy if the bushing at the end of the drive shaft is worn as well. Pretty much an SOB to get out of there.

However if you really only need the rotoflex replaced, yes that is pretty easy.
