My Rover has been running hot when I go up hills. Changed the thermostat this weekend and it did no good. Now I am trying to get the fan off to check the viscous fan clutch and possibly remove the radiator to have it rodded. I got a 36mm fan clutch wrench from Autozone and it just slips around and rounds off the nut. Is it a backwards thread? What else can I do to get this ^%#$ thing off? Charles |

It's a bit of a bitch. The TDi's are left-handed threads and the petrol 3.9's are standard RH thread. You'll probably have to back out 2 of the fan pulley bolts just enough to lay a big screwdriver (great big) or some other lever to block the pulley from turning. I had to block the pulley from the top and then crawl underneath to get enough room to turn the nut. Although you do realize that you check the functionality of the visous coupler with the unit still attached to the vehicle right? Basically, at cold start up it should roar (noticably) and then diminish as the fluid in the coupler bleeds out and allows the fan to freewheel. With the engine hot (and off) you should be able to spin the fan but there should be more resistance compared to when cold. But all this is pretty academic, it's probably going to run hot until you rod, recore or replace your radiator. Jim |

Charles, you didn't say which rover you have; 3.9 with V-belts are different from 3.9 and others with serpentine belt. it's been long time since I replaced my fan clutch on the rangie, so I can't say off the bat which is which. from the standpoint of the fan not unscrewing itself due to rotation the V-belts should have RH threads and serpentine - LH threads. check the archives, KVT once said which is which. |

The nut will unscrew in the direction of the fan's rotation. This way the fan's friction in the air is keeping it tight on the bolt, instead of spinning it off. |

I finally got it off. The wrench that I got from Autozone loan a tool was worn out. I went back and they gave me a new one off the shelf and it fit the nut much tighter and took it off. Thanks for all the help. Charles |
