The saga, the agony, of the Disco browsing and soon purchasing continues.

I think I've found a suitable '97... it's an SD, runs nicely, decent miles. No moonroof. No brush guards. No fancy schmancy.

So does anyone LOVE their moonroof, or could you care less about it? Any other SD or '97 thoughts?

By the way just let me say that I love the V8. Sitting in idle with the AC up all the way and the engine doesn't bat an eye.

I have a 96 SD. I think it's great. I think the moon roofs make it too car like, I like the original rover basic no frills utility truck feel to the SD. It's a great truck.

Buy the thing if it's in good shape mechanically.

Out of the 10 vehicles I've owned in my driving history, only 2 have had a sunroof. Both are my most recently owned cars, 98 MercedesBenz ML320 and 98 LR Disco. I will never own another vehicle that doesn't have a sunroof. Granted the LR sunroof is not as generous as most others. I wished it was at least wider and opened up more. I vote that they are great.

I haven't used the back sunroof in a long while. I often use the front one. What I really like is on a hot day I can park it with the sunroof open (partially or full open), and lock the car. It keeps the inside a lot cooler. (of course with the roof rack on it is unlikely that anyone can crawl through it.)

Plus, I just like the extra light coming in, open or closed.

i second reed...the rack is like having built in burgler bars, so in the texas summer, i leave both wide open. what was i thinking, buying a black rover?

i like the light and i mostly use the back one more quiet but still moves fresh air into the truck.

I don't have a sunroof... I like em.. but I know a couple Discos with em and they leak so I was too afraid of this option.. I like having less electrical stuff in my truck anyway though.. I'd love to loose my power windows and door lock as well!
I've heard problems with the sunroofs and power seats but then again I've heard lots of things..and one things for sure two sunroofs is cool..
You could always have a manual sunroof installed?

Both of the Discos I've had, I specifically sought out ones that didn't have sunroofs. I knew about British and seals, and so a seal right over your head in a British vehicle sounded like a bad idea.

I don't regret not having them. If I bought a new Disco, I might consider not ruling one out for having them, but, not having them in an otherwise clean truck would not be a put-off, IMHO....

My 1996 Discovery has dual sunroofs. Both have been replaced twice, under warranty. Now, the seals are going, and I have a lot of wind noise, even at city speeds. If I had it to do over again, I would buy an SD without the sunroofs.

I agree with Leslie & william. If I were looking for a Disco, I would try to find one without sunroofs. Mine rattle like crazy. My brother had to use silicone to seal around each sunroof on his Disco. Water would drip inside when it was raining.

Thank you all for your diametrically opposed and excellent points of view. Agh! Well, now I logically feel better about the prospect of having no moonroof (sunroof, hole in roof, whatever) ... but I also want one more!

I had a sunroof in my previous truck and while it was nice to have, I didn't find myself using it a lot. I did appreciate the extra light that came in though but it wasn't an overly important factor. However, when I bought my Disco, I specifically wanted it without sunroofs. I had heard many cases of the sunroofs breaking and to me it was just something that was going to break. It was just a matter of when. If I had to do it again, I'd still buy it without a sunroof.

I have 2 97 discos SD with a front dealer installed sunroof in each one. The only time they leak is when the drain holes get plugged.

I had to get one repaired under warranty because the motor made a lot of noise.

So IMO, if the truck is good, buy it, and you can always add the sunroof (or 2).

I enjoy big fat cigars, so to me a sunroof is a necessity!

I have a '97 SD and love it! It, too, doesn't have any sunroofs. The interior might be darker because of it, but I don't have to worry about them not opening, or closing, or half opening/closing. No leaks either and no sagging headliner. It also doesn't have the power/heated seats, so no headaches there either. Mine has been very good to me for the 2 plus years that I've owned it. If this vehicle is solid then buy it. Atlantic British sells manual pop-up sunroofs for the Disco if you really want one. I don't think you will miss not having one in the long run. Good Luck!

I have a 2003 S sans roofs. I personally am not a big fan of sunroofs; I've owned 2 convertibles, and love droptops, but sunroof are just an annoyance to me. More wind noise (even when new), and the Disco sunroofs are particularly crappy in that they only open halfway. What good is that? I don't particularly care for the light shining down on my head, either.

Now a sunroof like my friend's old Mercedes 240D... Manual, huge, monstrous beast :-)

My wife, OTOH, requires every vehicle she owns to have a sunroof. Her '02 Freelander has already had it stick open once and require service. Now that's something I don't have to worry about :-)

It's all personal preference. Some people, like my wife, will buy vehicles based upon whether they have a sunroof or not. I personally care more about the vehicle itself, if I like it I'll buy it sunroof or not. But I prefer no roof for the reasons stated above...

Now if there was a convertible D2... ;)

Hi All
While I feel for you guys who have had leaks, I can honestly say mine never leaked and have been fine since 1998, and before you say I live in a dry climate, I live in the UK which is the first port of call for all the water in the Atlantic ocean.
There are pros and cons for both set ups, I wish I could go for a low profile rack, but I like the extra light and airflow, I do believe there are so many scare storys about, and if the truth was known it probably all boils down to poor maintenance, LR`s are expensive to service properly, so some decide to take a chance.
I have never seen a broken sunroof. worn out perhaps, but never broken. Aside from the silly hooks on the blinds.

I've had numerous vehicles - both with and without sunroofs. The best sunroofs either completely retracted, or were removable. In the case of my Disco (no sunroof), I don't miss it. Air Con works pretty well, the windows open wide. If the Disco you are looking at is in good shape, I'd say go for it....

Jaime-

I haven't had a good cigar in a long time so I forgot about that one...

Get the best ruck you can find. You can always add a sunroof later. In another thread, some gentleman is making a roadster out of his Disco.

2002 SD DII (no sun roof).

When it came time to get as much new Rover (at my price) as I could I had to stop somewhere.

So, the sun roof got scratched off my list and I took the 6-CD changer and a factory installed trailer hitch (wiring included) instead and I'm very happy, and this coming from someone that loved his (2) previous Bimmers (with sunroofs).

My 96 SE7 has dual sunroofs and are hidden by my wilderness rack so there is no extra light (I have a deck). The rear can't open because of the rack and the front is just too noisy.

Saturday we should be picking up a 99 D1. Thankfully it doesn't have sunroofs. As a bonus, it will probably be the clincher to pawn the 96 off on the wife and take the 99 for myself instead of what we had originally agreed. Bare bones stock new project!

I have a 94 Disco with 144,000 miles and dual sunroofs. Neither sunroof leaks or make noise. I love them and use them all of the time. I am not a big fan of A/C so I drive with the windows and sunroofs open.

I loved the sunroofs. The rear one is the only one that opens now. The front on leaks when it wants to, and used to open when it wanted to. It is past dead now and leaks in the winter time, go figuire.

I still like looking out the sun roof at my hellas on my roof rack.

I have a 98 and always look out the sunroof to see if any bicycles have fallen of the rack. The front sticks open often. Toss-up. Wouldn't let it be a deciding factor in your purchase.

What is the difference between a moonroof and a sunroof? (Other than "it depends on if you drive in the day or night")

The moonroof and sunroof terms are pretty much interchangeable... Moonroofs used to be a Ford thing. Although often the moonroof term is used to signify that the "sunroof" is built into the roof (and typically slides open inside the roof. By that definition, Disco's have sunroof and not moonroofs (tilt and slide sunroofs to be exact). But call it whatever you want, sunroof, moonroof, hole-in-the-roof, whatever.

I have a 97 Centre Edition Disco with duel moon roofs and I love 'em. I've never had a problem or a leak and I live in the Northwest where there is alot of rain. So far, so good. Good luck

Wow, twentyEIGHT posts later... I guess I hit a hot button with this topic!

I should know by Friday whether my future Disco will have only a roof or potentially a moon/sun/rain roof.

Car shopping is stressful. I think I need to go on a nice weekend drive somewhere.

Have a 96 D1 SD had the aftermarket roofs put in by the shop that does it for local LR dealerships, beautiful job and quality product(Hollandia). Two years and not a problem plus no cheapo roll up shade that always breaks,it has sliding shades with same color material as roof liner and nice louvered vents. This shop is in Massepequa N.Y.

My Disco has no moonroof/sun roof. My RRC came with a solid roof as well, but I recently swapped on a roof that had a moonroof (more for the fact that it was a white roof...and the moonroof would also aid the cooling of the car). So far I like it...

Kris made a good point. I also use the sunroof to check on jerry cans or other cargo secured on the front of the rack. Just reach up and test the tension on the tie-downs.

if your sunroofs start to leak, buy a roofrack and install a floor on it. no more rain, same cooling. and you could get fancy and put lexan panels in the floor of the rack over the sunroofs.

This thread got me thinking, and trying to remember my attitude when I bought my Disco.

Of course what I really wanted was a D-110, sunroof or not. But the outlandish prices for a truck two years older than the Discos I was looking at, put that Idea on hold.

Aside from that though, I had pretty much grown up in rag-tops, sports cars, Jeeps, etc... So if the Disco didn't have the sun roofs, I probably would have purchased a D-90, hard or soft top, and spent most of the year with the top in the barn.

And the answer is... I bought one with dual moonroofs (moonrooves?)... LOVE them. Big difference in the feeling of being in the vehicle..
