My egnine starts up high, then drops unstable low, then stables out. after driving in stop and go traffic, or at a stop light for more than 5 minutes, something in the engine seems to cause the idle to drop unstable low.

code 48 is my enemy!

As a test,i disconnected the:
Fuel temp switch
TPS
IAC
Vacuum advance tube
Put in a new VSS.

fyi:
fuel pressure is good.
coolantlevel is good

these tests were done to see if this would effect the unstable low idle. Yes, it did bring the idle up, BUT after idling for 5 minutes, something in the engine, a sensor of something turned off, and dropped the idle was unstable low again.

part 2 of the test is that i blocked off the IAC (base idle set) with the the same parts disconnected. i got the same results. 5mins then unstable low idle.

question.. what other devices not listed above can control egine idle?

my rig is for sale, and i dont feel right selling it if this is a serious problem.

Code 48 is the IAC valve. Have you replaced it yet?

Code 14 is coolant temp sender problem
Code 15 is fuel temp sender problem

Do yourself a favor and replace the IAC if you have not already. Then replace the other two senders when you get those codes.

Do this test. Plug everything back in, because that's how Rover designed it to operate properly. Now, with your head near the engine bay, have somebody turn the engine off. Right after the engine turns off, you will be listening for a short-duration motorized sound coming from the IAC. If the IAC is working properly, you should hear the noise of the valve closing.

If you do not hear it, it may not be functioning, it may be the reason why your idle is still screwed up, and I'm betting it may be the reason why code 48 is showing up on the OBD.

Disconnect your battery. Let it sit for 10 minutes. Reconnect battery. Turn ignition on, you will see 02 code on the OBD. Turn ignition off for a minute. Turn back on and the OBD should clear itself. If it does not, disconnect the OBD from it's plug and reconnect it. Go drive and see if the 48 code reappears.

Make sure the vacuum line to your distributor is reconnected while you are at it.

Why do you need a reason? Seems as of recent, you been doing tons or retarded chit without a good reason. So now you demand it of me?

Reset the ECUs memory and start from scratch. Realize you will need your radio-code from your owners handbook to use the stock radio again after reconnecting the battery.
