Quick question... I have a '97 disco that I need a brush guard and winch for. I wanted a wrap around brush guard that has the horizontal bars to protect the headlights. I can't seem to find one that will accomodate a winch. Is that right?

Thanks for your help,
Kelly

Kelly

I've seen the setup before on the Trek Disco's but I've never seen it available for sale, at least not here in Canada. I asked my dealer about it and they said you can't buy those. I guess the closest you could come to that is something like a KVT setup or if you want, buy a TJM or ARB blade and have the brush bar welded onto it...but that means you'd have to buy a brush guard from somewhere and cut the top half off. Maybe someone else will be able to provide more info but I've looked for something similar to what you're asking about and that's the conclusion (custom make it from a blade and brush guard) that I've come to.

I thought this was a package that LR offered at one time and was pricey ($$). They might still have it though.

If we are talking factory equipment here, you need the winch bumper (I believe it comes with an A-frame.) then order the brush winch brushguard separatly. At least that's what they made me do when I got my disco in '98. Maybe the service Dept. just wanted to put their kids through college.

The brush bar for the winch setup is actually a replacement A-frame with brush bar wings welded to it, and is a direct replacement for the A-frame. I'll see if I can round up the part numbers.

It may be one of those items that LR has discontinued. As we approach the release of the D3, I notice some add on accessories for the D1 are being dropped from their inventory, focusing more on the new. Maybe that's their way of suggesting to us that we should be upgrading to the new Discos.
I've been told that the side body molding for D1 has been discontinued, though I have seen it on somebodies web catalog. Just glad I did all that at purchase/delivery in 98.
You might try some other dealers, maybe Rovers North. I know Rover Connection still has the factory winch mount but with the A-bar.

Alex is right in that LR publicly offered a full brush/winch bar "kit" unit both on the old web site online truck builder app and in the catologs, up until the end of the D1 production line in '99 and was actually included on a few of the very original XDs package. They were very hard to come by which is why you dont see too many of them around. Here is a picture of one:
http://www.discoweb.org/pa/img017.jpg

However, Alan's dealer is correct in that LR never offered a full brush bar/winch unit on the D2's for public sale. All the ones you see on the TReK D2's were custom made by LRSV division for the '99 event and removed after that event and stored away for use on the 01 event trucks and again removed after the event before the trucks were sold off.

So if you are looking for the LR stock look of the brush bar with winch capability, a KVT would be pretty much the only way to considering his bumpers are made reusing the factory brush guards.

I used to use a Multi-mount. I think my profile still has a picture. It worked fine for a long time but unless you modify the mounting point a bit you will loose lots of approach angle.

That's a very clean look but I'm not sure I'd like it that low though.

Yeah, I have this on my 96 XD. I'll be putting it up for sale soon. I will hopefully have a new winch bumper soon. Here's a pic:http://www.discoweb.org/gregbright/xd2.jpg

How much you want for it Greg?

Actually I'd like to see how a TJM blade would look with a LR brush bar welded onto it. I think it'd look sharp!

Alan,
I'm not sure yet. I haven't looked into how much it's worth. I don't know what it went for new or how many are available. Once I get my new bumper I'll post a price in the Classifieds section.

I purchased the ARB SRS compatible bull bars with a Magnum (Warn) 9000 on my 97 Disco SE and I've been pleased minus a little loss on approach angle. The solution was relatively pricey compared to other options but it’s by far the best quality that I found, and the install went relatively smoothly.

i recently bought the A-Frame winch compatible brush bar for my '98 DI. Liked the look of the wraparound and started doing some searching and found that my local dealer carries the "top half" of the wraparound brush bar, that bolts directly onto the winch basket where the A was bolted. It is $435.00 just for the wraparound to protect the headlights. He said he can order as many as he wants, it takes 1 1/2 -2 weeks to get there. The Trek DII at the dealership has this setup and that's where i got the idea from but it would be cheaper and simple to buy a used brush bar and cut the top half off, weld feet to the bottom and bolt it back on.

Here are the parts numbers, and prices (October 1998 prices) when I had Land Rover San Jose install my winch w/ brush bar;

1 LNRA27550 Winch XD900 $1571.95
1 LNRA26467 Acsy Kit $ 302.55
1 LNRA31766 Winch Mount $1016.98
1 NTC8477 Spring, RHF $ 127.72
1 NTC8476 Spring, LHF $ 130.78
1 STC7694 Brush Bar $ 417.51

The price of the brush bar looks like it isa in-line with the price Garrett's dealer is quoting. (Not bad after 5 years.) Plus they charged $328 to install all this.

The winch is the standard XD9000i, I think the LRSJ computer trunkated the description.

BTW- I have the A-frame that came with it if anyone wants one bad enough.
