Looking to build a Hybrid D90 with the following

Galvanized Frame
D90 ST Body
Chevy Vortec 327
NV4500 or AT Tranny
Atlas II
D44 front/rear

33's or 35's not sure.

Anyone done this? Any input? Thanks!

Doable. but $$$$$ and skill needed :)

You are going to be running a short rear DS with an NV4500 and an atlas unless you entend the wheelbase.

Justin - you may want to post that one over on the Pirate board - lots of crazy mods going on over there. Be warned - they'll hurt ya when you post as a newbie :)

An ultimate vehicle would be on volvo portals rather that POS d44s.

LOL

Justin this is what I build.RICKS ROCK ROVER
Ingredients for an OD green four-wheel drive

First take the ever-cool 1973 Series III Land Rover body off the frame and do away with all the weak components. Than get your self some good old American hard ware.
Front diff is a Dana 44 with Superior HD axles and big beefy 5-297-1 u joints Lock Right 5:13 Ring and pinion Front disc brakes and a Stainless Steel 21inch brake line Super winch Hubs and welded reinforcements on the diff cover
Rear diff is Ford 9inch with Superior HD axles Lock Right 5:14 Ring and pinion
Custom made drive shafts with CV joints and HD U joints
Power steering with U Max12 t ¾-16 National rod ends. HD steering pump, High out put alternator 140 AMP with dual925CCA Red Optima batteries
5 liter 302 bored .030, Performer Cam, Cyloyes timing chain, Edelbrock Performer manifold; sitting on it is an Edelbrock 600CFM 4Barrel, with a 6 deg wedge under it and a 5inch high K&N air filter. MSD 4x4 ignition box fires 20deg before TDC and 20deg after. MSD spark plug wires. Transmission is a custom C-4 with 2.94 1st gear transfer is the strong but small Dana 20 with 4to1 gears. To shift this B&M Truck Mega Shifter custom fit.
Front radius arms have been extended 18 inchs using RM-16H1-1/4 12 Rod ends, 7deg c bushing to bring castor back .To keep the front end from hitting the axle used R-21Firestone Air Bags, one bag can support 2500LBS Its a little over kill.
Also I am use small coil spring as bump stops there double as back up suspension if a bag blows.
The rear is a custom 3-link set up; Radius arms are extended 12inch using rod ends to connect with the frame. Also so using R-21 Firestone air bags. I believe 6-inch extension would work much better safety wise. To lift the bags I use a Ready Air Air compressor with a 4-gallon tank this is enough to run air tools at 120PSI at 60CFM .To dampen the corners Rancho RS 5012 not the best I would go for the 9000 series next time.
Rubber what else BFGs last year they were 339.50X15 But I thought I could use a little more contact pressure so on went 35 12.50X15 this is a great size for the weight of the Rover it stops wheel spin very effectively. But for those times when the tires do sink I break out the Ramsey Platinum 9500 use the ARB snack block will double the pounds of pull, as I have leaned do not try to pull with out giving the motor time to really cool down (you will pay for it if warranty is up)
Three 5 gallon gas jerry cans and one 5 gallon water and after Winter Romp a 10draw tool chest that is loaded from beer opener to propane heater and grill to 12DC spark plug cleaner, custom snow chains, lots of oils and lubes, Oh ya forgot the Hi lift jack dont stand in front of them I coughed blood for a while. Dual heaters and heated seats, 5-point seat belts, Hummv steering wheel, On board welder, Ten coats of OD paint. All of the work custom or not was done by myself. No joke about 7 years of labor. Was it worth it? Just ask my X wifes.

44s? 9inchers? That is HD? My friends I have seen D70s explode...if you guys wanna run 33-35 inch tires, then stick to the Rover axles, with ARBS and rear 30 spline axles, at least the pumpkins are tucked and you are being a wee bit brand loyal.
I have a project undergoing testing now, I'll keep you posted. The components ARE HD and they will be running much much bigger tires.
I think that Justin should stick to the Rover components, do some upgrades and 35s won't be an issue at all! Phillip Perkinson is right apart from the SG suspension ("lawn chair", right Kyle)
My advice

Nadim,

While stock they are marginal you can build a D44/9in to a level impossible in a rover.

A rear 9in can run 40 spline chromo the front you can run 4340 30spline warns and 300m CTM joints.

You could safely run 38+ on them

OK Ron, but you can also safely run 36s with the SG rear 30 spline axles and the ARB locker (or drop a nice Salisbury for the 38s)

Am I wrong?

I am not sure, as I am not building a rover setup for my buggy...I'll be running R******* front and rears...LOL...(they are actually cheaper here than a 10 spline rover!)

Cheers

"OK Ron, but you can also safely run 36s with the SG rear 30 spline axles and the ARB locker (or drop a nice Salisbury for the 38s)"

The problem is the front. While the 30spline might be ok with 36s no front end rover has ever made will be long term reliable with 36s and a front locker.

you speak the truth...but the original post asks for 33s or 35s...no need to go to a hybrid setup...
right?

35s is very sketchy with anything rover in front. If he is getting an atlas he has to swap out the rear axle (needs a center dif) so why not swap them both?
