Here is an electrical problem to stump ANYONE, if you have shared this same problem please speak up... if you can laugh along, feel free:

a week ago my abs light pegged on. three days later my cruise control intermittently refuses to engage. tonight i noticed the following:

i pull into the carport, turn engine off. i pressed on the brakes and the instrument panel illuminates and the "dim" headlights go on. i take my foot off the brake and everything goes dark (as one would expect). for kicks, i turned on my headlights and then pressed on the brake; the instrument panel lights up as if i turned the key to pre-ignition (bells, abs light, check engine light, service engine light, oil etc...). SOO- (for kicks) i insert my key and turn the engine on, and it starts with no problem. I still keep my foot on the brake and turn the key to the off position and remove the key!... and the engine continues to run until i take my foot off of the brake. I get out and back away slowly until i feel safe enough to remotely lock the doors and run. help would be nice...

Ryan,

I'm not sure if this helps but may. Since you have an older D1, check the hoses for the cruise control. Especially check the ends of the hose where they connect to the vacuum pump. If the ends are split or cracking, trim off an inch or so and put them back on. If they won't reach, you'll have to replace them. I believe they are 7/32" vacuum tubing.

I've had the cruise control go out several times in the last year. At first, a trim of the end of the hose got me through but then I eventually replaced the hoses. Since the cruise goes out commonly from the hose deterioration, I would look at that first and see if you can take that out of the equation.

As far as the other problems, I can't help you. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than I will chime in.

There was a guy around here recently putting Lucas curses on people he didnt like. Sounds like what you have. You dont need a mechanic man, you need an exorcist. God help you!

Ryan, I'm going to take a shot. There might be a plug somewhere under the hood that the wires have worn away and are now touching. I would look for a large wire bundle plug from the fuse box going into the firewall. I had a old Ford truck that did the same thing that you are talking about (couln't use the turn signals because it would kick the starter on). I had to fix the plug by shrink wrapping the wires right at the plug. Years of brake fluid dripping on the wires. I hope it helps, good luck and god speed.

Has the windshield ever been replaced? It's possible that it's not sealed all the way aound and water has leaked onto the back of the fuse box causing your grief.

Ryan,

My problem on my 94 DI (non cruise control) is similar, except if the engine is running and is warmed to optimum temp, and the heater blower switch is on 2nd or 3rd speed, and I turn the ignition off, the engine continues to run with the key removed. I'm a new owner and getting use to the gremlins these vehicles have, but if anyone has had similar problems and fixes, Im all ears.

Note to Ryan:

I solved my wierd electrical problem (exactly the same as yours). I had taken my poor Disco to the dealer while on a road trip to diagnose some serious bad misfiring at low rpms (<2000). Too much money later they came up with the fix: new distributor cap and rotor.

As a special bonus, they replaced the rear brake light bulb, but forgot to put in the correct one. They put in a single-filament bulb, so the brake/parking light curcuits got crossed. Replaced the bulb with the proper one and have been trouble free.

I'd look at the brake lights and see if you have a grounding problem or even a bulb with an internal short.

Hope this helps.

Jim,

you are a genius! and a generous one at that. I too have a random misfire and recently replaced my left, rear, brake light with a single filament bulb... I am going to remedy it on Monday,,, stay tuned for more information.

THIS DISCOWEB THING WORKS!
