Hey all,

Just bought a little place in Concord and hope to finally meet some of the folks I've talked to here. Perhaps I might get a chance to wheel with some natives at Uwharrie? Drop me a line if you want to show a newcomer the ropes out here.

Cheers,

e

Welcome to NC Erik. I am about 4 hours from you on the coast but there are many Dwebbers close to you. Check out www.carolinarovers.org. They are the folks that run the annual UWH event and have a BBS on their site.

Paul,

Once I get moved into the house, I'll be getting my CROC membership set up. I enjoyed the few events I got to attend back in the Bay Area with Northern California Rover Club. If it hadn't been for the delays moving here, I had planned on going to the event at Uwharrie last month.

Look forward to finally meeting you in the next few months.

Cheers,

e

I'm in Charlotte, but have been up in Concord lately helping my friend with a drivetrain swap on his Range Rover. Once we're done with that, and get my 37's on there will definitly be some Uwharrie trips.

Wecome. I too am a NC newbee. The Rovering is great up here. I am about 40 miles from Uwharrie (Pinehurst) and would love to go any time my schedule allows. I do not even know where Concord is yet. I gather it is on the coast. I would love to do a beach run and/ or camping trip sometime

Any Defenders in the area? We had a good representation of D110 and 90's back in the Bay Area - though they mostly sat parked in front of Starbucks or Safeway stores.

Kennith, are you to be re-deployed soon? I'm eager to finally meet you and the others. I think the missus will let me out to play once the Rover arrives in the next ten days.

Cheers,

e

Chris,

Definitely drop me a line if you get the time. Hope all is well with you and the family.

Greg,

I've still not ridden in a D90 after all these years! I did get a chance to spend some time in a few 110s and a Tomb Raider 130 last summer though. I hope we can take advantage of this wet weather and the resulting mud before it all dries-up!

Cheers,

e

Well, it's two brothers. One's in Boone, and the other is in Asheville. I met them through my other friend with the D-90. Problem is, I can't remember their names. I think the older brother's name is Will, and the younger brother is in college in Boone.

Not much help, huh?

Matt,

Just online again after a long week without broadband - gotta love that Time Warner - An AOL Company service!

I lived on Alameda island back in California. Before that, I owned a little house in the Laurel dist. What part of Oakland did you live in?

Erik, I am in Concord as well. About 4 miles north of the Speedway off Roberta Rd. Lets hook up for a Uwharrie run. Don't worry about the mud drying up; we've had a years worth of rain in the past 6 months here. Shoot me an email if you want to run out to Uwharrie or the mtns. I'm always up for a trail run.

I need to break in my new Warn smoker. Hope my truck shows up sometime today. Fifteen days from California - yikes!

Do you drive that white LRSV D2 I've seen around the historic district? Or possibly the D90 spotted here on Saturday?

If my truck doesn't show up by the weekend, we could meet for a pint at the Tavern if you're free.

Cheers,

e

Erik, I'm in a silver 99 D2(click on my profile for a pic of the rig). You probably haven't seen me as I don't drive around Concord every day. But you may have heard my tires from very long distances away! :-)

Not really a drinkin guy but we can get together and talk rovers. I'm around this weekend, no plans other than possibly a bit of metal trimming on the rover. Shoot me an email. alowens@rc2corp.com

Just curious, how did you end up shipping your rover? Always wondered what that would cost for coast to coast transit.

Erik,

No, I don't suspect I am. I wouldn'd mind a little off-road outing in the near future. Hey, man, shoot me an e-mail and we will talk.

kenwhichard@earthlink.net

I drove my rover out to Cali and back a little while ago, no biggie. You just need someone who has the free time to pilot the Uhaul.

Cheers,

When is the next event in NC? Still have yet to take my rover out! Thanks again greg for the wheels and tires... Got the lift on and the bumper trimmed and it is looking sharp.

Paul, are there any decent places left around jville to wheel? Everything there was just one big mud/swamp pit last time we went out in the Blazers. Grew up there and my parents still live there so I'm in town fairly often.

Erik,
As far as the D90's do, there are several around here in greensboro and raleigh, but they seem to be owned by mostly rich teenagers (or on loan to them by rich fathers) blasting around town like they are cool.

See you guys next trip

I've got no issues with teens in D90s - heck I'll wheel with just about anyone who isn't dangerous to themselves or others!

In California, L.A. specifically, it was very 90210 to arrive at the Promenade in a yellow D90 for a little Urban Outfitters shopping. I was in a Jetta and had to fantasize about arriving in a D90! Certainly, that crowd has moved on to the Cayenne by now.

The trick is grooming another generation on why off-roading is fun and rewarding, and how to do it responsibly so the trails stay open to all of us! I wish someone had shown me the basics of off-road driving when I started to get interested in it during my high-school years. It would have saved me from tickets, a wet engine block and plenty of lectures from my father!

I was checking out the SOLAROS site and SAE has been moved to November. It would be great to get some NC folks together to head down there for that.

Justin,

Other than the beaches and a few places on Base, I do not know of anywhere to go off road here in Jville. Been to UWH twice this year and had a blast and I think I might head out there again this fall (schedule permitting).

Paul,
Watch out for the tank trails over by the Verona Loop ranges...
I made it further than my Plt's Hummvee did, but in the end I had to be winched back out. Sandy Run is a mess of a mud bog as well. I can't say that I really like that kind of wheeling but so much, I guess I'd feel different if I had a Toyota with 38's or something.

When are you coming back to the area?

As soon as I can! My assignment here still has another 18 months, and then I am requesting to go to a MEU or BLT-1st choice is back down there-you know as well as I do that more people don't ask to go to Lejeune compared to Pendelton so I'll probably get it.
Do you think you'll be down there long-term as the V-22 program matures?

The D90, teen things was just an over generalization... I'm not too much older than them. However, living in Cary I saw a few D90's, H1 Hummers, etc be driven by the very 90210 crowd (as Erik puts it)... Usually tearing them up on the street... Never wheeling. Not to say I didn't tear around town in my vehicles when I was younger too. I did. But just in a beatup K5 Blazer or 280Z ;).
I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions where teens around here are true enthusiasts with their 'vert D90's, I just didnt meet any. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Ray,

I took my name off the Albuquerque, NM list which means I am here for a while. The only place that interests me is England if and when they come on board to buy some airplanes. In 18 months, we will have a bunch of V-22's here in Jville.

There are more and more Rovers here since that dealership opened up in Wilmington. I get people waving and flashing there lights at me from time to time. One time, my wife asked me if the truck was on fire or something because a D1 was flashing and waving.

Paul
The other day I saw a Disco around here that had a tire cover from them (the Wilmington dealer)- I was suprised, when I was there we had to go all the way to Cary for a dealership. Of course even J-ville is getting more upscale now-with a Hooters and all.

That "truck on fire" thing cracks me up b/c back when I was having my clutch trouble we were powershifting home and people were waving and such and my wife was laughing at how absurd it is that we're limping this truck home and people are still pulling up and asking "What kind of lift is that?" or saying "oh, that's a nice setup" Only in a rover.
Were you with the program when it was up at Pax river & Quantico?
I'm kinda shocked you didn't want to go to NM, I keep trying to get my wife to sign off on going back to AZ but she won't have it-she's an East coast girl, but if I 'had' to go...
