Read on www.landroverclub.net/Club/HTML/Overheating.htm about supposed design problem with heads, that can lead to overheating (see below). Read elsewhere of a guy that torques this 3rd row of bolts to 50% of recommended torque. Anybody here removed the 3rd row of bolts? Jaco "6. The cylinder head gasket. Hey, that's my favorite one. The Rover engine has a special design fault in his heads. The heads are held on by 14 bolts. The problem lies in the bolts 11-14. When they get tightened they put an load on the upper bolts, raising the heads by a slight amount..." etc. |

Yes, the 3rd row of bolts was eliminated with the new head gasket. So, I guess it stands to reason that you can remove them or at least back up on the torque. |

All heads cast after June 15, 1995 do not even have the holes for the lower row of bolts. |

Is this on the 3.9 or the 4.2 engines? or are the heads on both one and teh same and I'm showing my newbiness by asking this? |

I guess I could have added: mine's a 3.5L, 1972. Maybe its relevant :-/ |
