Okay... I have to admint my lack of full understanding of the DC Joint on the D2 front drive shaft and I screwed up. At 48,000 miles I felt I was on borrowed time with the "sealed for life" u-joints and finally ordered some Spicer Joints from Bill at GBR. Two days after getting the new joints in the mail I was driving home and started to feel light vibration when stepping on the gas. I just inspected the joint a week earlier and it looked fine but I didn't want to chance it and parked the truck as soon as I got home and waited for a nice day to take off the shaft. Today, after pulling out the shaft I noticed one of the bearing cups had a crack in it. Yikes! No problem I thought since I had the new parts and it didn't grenade on me. In my haste of getting out the old joints I managed to remove the center of the DC joint and removed what looked like a press fit socket joint and it's roller bearings and spring. Is this something that is easy for me to fix or should I take it to a shop? Or am I screwed and need a new front shaft? BTW- two of the bearing caps on one of the u-joints had NO grease at all. All that came out of them were dusty-rusty pin bearnings. The U-Joint itself was so worn I was just moments away from needing a new transmission along with the front drive shaft. So much for "sealed for life". |

Take it to a shop, that's what I did, should be fine as long as you have all the parts. I had already screwed up a normal ujoint install on another driveshaft, so I just took it in and bit the bullet. I think they only charged me $40. FWIW, mine was in a similar condition, they were surprised I wasn't feeling any vibes. |

they are a POS, and your mostly likely screwed...I had a drive shaft made at a local driveline shop, fully greasable, spicer double cardon... |

Michael, did you have the socket joint when you took in your prop shaft? Or was this on a non- DC joint that you had them do it for $40? |

I just dropped the whole prop shaft (front DC), carried it in with new u-joints in their boxes. |
