Has anyone on the board ever recoated their rack? I just got my "used" Adventure Rack delivered to me yesterday afternoon. The paint isn't in the best shape. In fact, its in bad shape. The previous owner has already tried to paint over many rust spots. I thought these things would have a tougher finish on them. I am considering sand blasting it and having it repainted black at the body shop or getting it coated with Line X, Husky or some sort of bedliner material. Or I may just sand down the many bad spots and paint it myself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also, this thing was a bear to put on. It seemed like the feet came out too far and I was having to put all my body weight into it. Did I do something wrong. A couple of really nice scratches on my roof and crushed portions of gutter-it is installed.
The long bolts that thread through the bottom of the foot and fasten onto the feet of the rack...am I to do that first ot last. They are impossible to screw in. I only got one to go on with ease.
Lastly, are gutters replaceable or are they part of the roof? Thanks all.

I had mine sprayed with rhino line type stuff not the real thing. It flaked off in 12months would not recomend that , but maybe the real stuff would stick better? Now next go around I'll try the powder coating,, M.K. of Jason how much did that cost you as a reference point?
thanks-----Jim

Some thing else to look forward to having powder coated. My factory winch mount rusted, had it replaced under warranty. Six months later that one rusted, they replaced it. The third time I had it powder coated at their expense. Been two years now and the sucker has yet to flake or rust. Going to do it to my steel wheels also. Another vote for powder coating. It's not cheap though.

sorry i am not spekaing from experience of having a rack powder coated. I don't even have a rack (yet). But through my job i specify that a lot of things are to be p-coated and the finish is a lot stronger and more durable to paint. It goes on pretty thick. but like any other finish it can scratch and then you have to touch it up with plain old paint.

it will be cheaper for you if you prep. the rack yourself. clean off all the rust, and i think all you need to do is scruff up the existing painted surface real good so the powder has something to adhere to.

you can also call around and see if you can get your rack added to a large order that the that the p-coating shop may have going on. that way you'll get in on the savings of being part of a larger order. people where i work get in on a deal like this sometimes. the only prob is, you usually gotta know someone at the shop. ask around you may get lucky.

the cost varies with the shop doing it. the nice thing is once its on its on. the other cool trick is you can get colors. i must disagree with jason on one point leave the prep to the shop. the rack will more than likely be sand blasted and cleaned prior to the powder coat finish. i really don't think you can prep it to the level that is needed to get the process to take. oil off your hand could screw the batch, and you'll have to handle it in transport so save your sweat and let the pros prep it. jason does make good sense on shopping and attempting to get your rack thrown in with someone's big order.
good luck

Powder Coating is the cats a*$!! Its a good idea to have anything you want powder coated sand blasted first. (I've had dirtbike frames done and this is just what i was told.) After its blasted it has to be dipped in some kind of acid then to the p-coat..Its superstrong hard finish! And you can get almost any color you want... I think they even do that colored chrome look now too! I was dreaming of orange p-coated safari bumpers and orange p-coated bead lock rims on my avalon blue disco...and now an orange rack!

as homer simpson would say.....mmmmmmmmpowdercoating..(drool,drool)

If you want metal flooring like the expanded steel, or "chicken wire" you may want to install that before having it P-coated. Just a thought.

Good article in the Tech section about the expanded steel flooring.

Thanks guys. I don't know why I didn't think of powder coating. I actually know a couple of peple who powder coat. Duh!
I agree-powder coating is a strong method. The metal is prepped, dipped in a solution (to attract the powder or paint and then it is baked I believe. I've had wheels powdercoated-I'm sure its the same process. I'll give an update when I can afford to do it. :-)
Speaking of colors...Oxford Blue D2 with IS300 gunmetal color Prolines with matching color rack. Blingin'!
Thanks for the opinions guys.

I sandblasted my brushguard and repainted it with some of that truckbead liner coating. I applied a primer coating first before I did the liner. It has been on for 3 years with no flakes or chips. It sets outside and has held up excellent. If you do get a chip the texture of the liner lets you shoot some over the chip to hide it and you cant tell you did it.
