Just picked up a 4.0 Ive got the coil over already done by motorcarsltd. If anyone wants some pics or info about the coilover job let me know. It looks like some simple offset mounting brackets which leave the original bag mounts open/unfettered.

I have been reading "Lowrider" magazine and there's a ton of street dancing crap out there - ya know where they actually operate the vehicle remotely and it jumps and kicks itself up with about 10k worth of stereo crap in there...so theres plenty of valving/bagging componenets around.

There's a guy down here in Austin who has his 4.6 all set for serious offroading. 2" or 3" lift, I know the guy who did it and he said that it's pretty simple, just relocate the sensors to provide the extra travel.

Does anyone have the ODB1 software/setup on their 4.0/4.6 - I really need some more geek factor...LOL.

Today Im trying to figure out the undercarriage - what seems the most vulnerable. I guess its pretty much the same as the classic as far as diff covers and sliders go. it seems to look more like the defender the way the frame sticks out from the body.

Hey Sean:

I too just got a 96 4.0 with the motorcarsltd coil conversion, will be picking it up next week. I am looking to either fabricate a 2" spring spacer lift, or adding some new 2" springs, would like to just add the spacers for now, could you e-mail me some pics of the set-up so I can see how the spring seats are mounted and if there is anyway 2" spacers could be mounted.

I will putting on some 265/75/16 MT's, for now looks like nobody makes any sliders, winch bumpers, etc. for these RR's. I will be trying to make this RR trail ready too, keep us updated on what you come up with.

BTW: My kid just loves the Rubicon video.

Sounds good. You can easily put the 2" springs on, or spacers...RTE has the spacers for a pretty good deal or maybe Ali will share his spec for them or Wes - one of those guys had some machined from billet for pretty cheap. I'll take a couple of pics today of the basic setup.

I am pretty sure that its going to be tricky to get some sliders made - the door panel has some trim, and the frame hangs down sort of like a defender...We'll have to come up with a good design. I think theres some guys in SoCal club that have done a lot in this area, Im going to see if I can find that site.

I think Im going to rely on my buddies' winches for this truck, the bumper and winch are so dang heavy and ruin so much approach angle, Im tempted to remove the crap from my classic!! Seriously, I know I could gain a lot of manuverability by removeing it and cutting off the trailer hitch...I almost never go out alone so I'd love to ditch the winch.

I would like to mess around with the air suspension. It looks like you could actually run both systems if you could figure a few things out...might be fun to try. Check out that Lowrider mag or some other street rod mags and you'll see a ton of components out there.

Glad you guys dig the DVD - Axe has outdone himself this time, really put a lot of hard work into the production.

Thanks Sean,

I agree the approach and departure really suck, I am thinking of giving John at rte a call to see if he could make a blade winch bumper for it, and getting rid of the whole stock pos front bumper, that would really help the approach. Could also maybe leave the stock sills in place and fab some mounting arms to the frame and make a thin slider that goes below the stock sill. Aedofab makes a slider for the DII that does this:

http://www.aedofab.com/prod_rover/sliders.htm

Just throwing some ideas out there. Have you come up with anybody that makes diff guards for the RR4.0 or will the ones off a DII fit. Hopefully with the price of these RR's dropping, people will start off-roading these things and maybe more products will be made avaliable.

I know I will be getting Part II of the video when it comes out.

There's actually a genuine winch kit. Not sure how you figure that it ruins approach angle, looks like this well out of the way. Further, never seen a 3rd party winch kit on a P38A.

This http://www.rangerovers.net/rrwinch.htm has details on the winch kit. Ok, so the bottom pieces stick out a little, big deal, but from the tires on up, past the spoiler, doesn't look like the tray is of any impact.

Please post pictures of the lift pictures (particular w/ EAS, don't care about coil), parts and where/how they were sourced. Thanks.

There's a complete set of 4 guards, save the sills, around for a P38A. It comes it two versions, both fab'ed by Southdown. a) Alumin(i)um, sold by LR, b) Steel, sold by Southdown. Southdown's steel guards are cheaper than LR's alumin(i)um guards by a $100 or so per guard. Cost is about $300-500 per guard, don't have the exact prices on hand right now.

Alan, check out this article from the SanDiego club nesletter on the air suspension:

http://www.lrcsd.com/Newsletter/may_june_2002.PDF

You can use the same diff covers for any Disco or classic I think...I just switched to QTs on my classic, maybe they will fit the 4.0 as well.

We might see a few more out there soon, but I think the disco will be the most popular for some time to come.

I am going to try to CAD up some drawings for sliders...I'll keep you posted if I can make any progress. Hard to say, Im on my second Bloody Mary so it'll get harder as the day goes on!!

Christian,

The stock factory winch setup is probably okay if you don't do anything too radical, but if you climb up a steep rock climb or stair step from a flat surface, you will nail the front of the winch or bottom of that winch mount and you will not go any further, same thing decending down a steep section to a flat section. The stock factory winch sticks out too far and the mount to me is way too low. I am looking for something like rovertym's blade bumper, approach angle is ridiculous.

Alan,
Rovers North has a diff guard (DIFF03) for the 4.0/4.6 for $145. Safety Devices also makes one for $165. I think that these prices will have to come down in the near future. Safety devices also makes a fuel tank guard for this model.

Hey Joel,

Thanks for the info, still kinda pricey, I am going to see if I can hook up with texasrovers for the Colorado trip, I can only probably do about 3 to 4 days of the trip, are you going to be able to make it.

I would like to take the RRC but it would probably wear me out just getting there, so I will probably take the newly acquired 96.

Sean,

I sliced a 4" (or maybe it was 3") round stock of alum into 1" slices. Then two holes were drilled and then I installed it under the spring perch.

When is the Co trip and where are you guys heading?

Here is the link on the texasrovers Colorado trip:

http://www.texasrovers.com/

The website seems to down at the moment. Sept 13-20 in the San Juan's and by Crested Butte.

I got onlinemetals to slice me some 4" aluminum dia. spacers for my RRC, cheap and worked great, I probably be doing the same for my 4.0, there is a tech write up about it:

http://www.discoweb.org/ome3/spacer.htm

Thanks, check out this great page on Rangie page

http://www.rangerovers.net/rrupgrades/airlifts.html

I think this should help those of us who want to do it. I asked the guy off line for his CAD files of the parts he fabricated so maybe he will share them. It looks like he's done a real nice job of it!

interesting, i am pretty excited to see some talk of gettting these 2nd generation range rovers offroad and even more excited to see they will still have the sexy smooth air ride.

i see several issues with the article, mainly the relocating of the FRont rad arms. seems like getting a special RTE arm or custome made one would be alot better then relocating the mount to where it's prone to bashing.

same with the rear. i really didnt understand how that was changed because i'm not too familiar with the underlings of this truck.

in the end i thing there is some solid advice there. i cant wait to see what you guys come up with.

I just picked up the 96 RR4.0se with the motorcarsltd coil conversion yesterday. I measured the springs in place, front 8.5" and rear 10", about the same as a stock DII:

http://www.discoweb.org/liftmeasurement/index.htm

I am now thinking off putting the ome 779 fronts and 781 rears, and get a 2 to 2.5" lift, any thoughts, comments or recommendations?
