I posted this question about 9 months ago, and I have searched the boards but still cant find an answer. I recently changed the brake pads and rotors on my 97 Disco. I thought that this would reset my ABS system. When I apply the brakes on normal driving conditions I feel a strong brake pedal vibration and hear what sounds like a pump engaging. I also sometimes hear a grinding type noise as this vibration starts. I pulled the ABS fuse and it goes away. Put it back in and it starts. How do I fix this. I want the ABS system to work in my disco, but am stumped on how to fix it. Is it something I can do? Is it going to cost me an arm and a leg to fix?

Looks like I semi found what I was looking for.

Sounds to me like I need to replace the Wheel Speed Sensors. Anyone done this?

Hmm
I have similar symptoms, although it only happens to me if one of the wheels doesn't have contact with the ground or when I am on uneven ground. I stop just fine otherwise... That vibration/grind thing is pretty annoying I must say. I'm considering just pulling the plug, as I'm not sure if I like the ABS to begin with. Does pulling the fuse make the ABS light go on? I'm interested in finding out what the problem is, too.

Cheers,
Jacquelyne

That was a good thread; it seemed to help me make up my mind. A switch sounds like the best idea, so that I can have non-ABS when off road, which is when I experience the casualties of ABS the most. Thanks Robert!

Cheers,
Jacquelyne

I pulled the plug. ABS light is on. There are 3 or 4 plugs for it. I pulled the 5amp from the satilite 1 fuse panel.

If your ABS lights comes on and stays on you have a bad Speed Sensor. Either check it first before you replace it. Push it inwards sometimes this helps, or check the cables and the connections to make sure they are intact. More than likely your sensor went out its pretty common and the syntoms match up. If you want a quick fix, pull the fuse from the fusebox in the engine compartment not the ones inside the car. The one on the engine controls the pump.

Robert - as noted above, it is very easy for the sensors to get dislodged, especially during a rotor change. Have you tried reseating all 4 sensors? - Just push all as far down as they will go by hand, or with a very light tap. Then drive and the sensors will self-gap and if they are all good - the ABS light will extinguish. If not, you may have a bad sensor - but will need Autologic or similar to find out which one is bad, or if it is another component.

I recently did some work on my swivel balls and found that one of my non-functioning ABS sensors had worn a shiny spot around the exciter ring...

When reseating sensors, some say to push in as far as will go and then withdraw the width of a screwdriver blade. The air gap is critical.

Also, it is not always the sensors that go bad, and sometimes, even the Testbook can't fix it. My truck has an inoperative ABS controller, though tto have been irreparably damaged by the continuing alternator failures my truck experienced right before I bought it.

Didn't like ABS on my Blazer (first vehicle with ABS in four-wheel drive) and wasn't worried about it not being operable on my first Rover.

We were having a similar problem. In fact wife rear ended another vehicle due to crazy acting ABS. In fact they would scare you at times. We switched the tires from Kelly AT to Dueler AT and the brakes totally changed personality to the way they should work. Who would have guessed?

I just disconnected the pump after 1 to many close calls on the road. Problem solved. Yes the ABS light is on. Yes it is annoying. If it really upsets you, then remove the bulb (15 minutes max).

Kevin, interesting that new tires cured your abs woes. Did you get the Dueller Revo AT? That's a SWEET tire!

Another thing that can cause an air gap is excessive play in the stub axle, IIRC.

Good luck!

I read the link provided above as my Anti-lock light is on. I suspect I may have messed up one of the sensors since, while parking, I hit a deep gutter and when I drove off, the sensor came on the next.
I tried pushing them in as suggested, but the light is still on. Reading the responses, I couldn't figure out how to remove the sensor. Could someone explain? Also, about how much do the speed sensors run?
TIA
Patrick

Patrick,

This really sounds like my ABS sensor problem -- I also had the strange noises and vibrations Krob81 had. My local dealer charged me $75 to diagnose and tell me which sensor was bad. British Atlantic charged me about $230 for the sensor. It took a couple hours to fix but it did the trick.

How exactly do I find these sensors? Perhaps I am sounding dumb here. Are they easily visible from underneath?
