new tires. Actually it is my wife's car and we live in Denver, Doesn't do any real offroading, only dirt trails to some campsites and such. 45K miles on the stock Michelin XPC. I can't find replacment XPC's anywhere. Tirerack has white side wall lettering, and that is a no go.

So should I go with Michelin syclone or some other tire. Again this is 99% city driving which also includes snow in the winter.

Again truck is fully stock 1998 D1.

I've been told that Michelin has discontinued the XPC and replaced it with the Syncrone. I just put new tires on and was told by the saleman at Discount Tire that I got the last 2 in stock. After that.....road hazard, I'm screwed on them.
I went back with the XPC because I needed only two. I had 2 that were spares that had never been on the ground, so that kept my cost down and used the best of the old as the spare.
If I had to replace all five, I would have given the BFG All Terrains a try.
Dunlop makes a decent inexpensive highway tire, the Rover AT. I'd check them out too.
My MB ML320 came with General Grabbers. They seem to be good tires as well.
And don't discount GY tires.
It's really hard to go wrong with any of the big names, barring Firestone Exploders.

Tirerack.com has the XPCs on close out $145/tire. I think there's also a rebate if you buy four. If they aren't available I've been reading about the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's. They are rated much better than the XPCs and they're cheaper. Only problem is I don't think you can get the load rating in the stock D1 tire size. You can get the 235/70-16 but they're SR rated or something like that. You can get them with the proper load rating in a slightly bigger 245/70-16. Check Tirerack.com for options.

Scorpion is a good general purpose tire, especially at the price.

I've seen people very disappointed with Scorpions.

Most complaints about Scorpions, and I have some too, are associated to HD off-road use. For what this guy does with his Disco, they are a viable option IMHO

I would suggest the BFG AT, given your criteria.

Actually, if you want to focus more on the snow-capability, might consider the Dunlop Radial Rover R/T.

If you need a less-expensive tire, look at the BFG Commercial T/A-traction tire.

If you're not going to be doing a lot of serious off-roading, I would consider sticking with the stock 235/70R16 size or 225/75R16 (which is a good bit more common, and close to the same size). 245/75R16 is nice, but, you'll need to do some other things (a bit of wheelwell trimming or relocation, bumpstop adjustments) to get them to fit.

More than once I was tempted to buy Scorpions, and the reason was always the same (after "analyzing this"): they are cheap, and "look" rugged. I've seen in person how poorly they perform off road, so altogether it puts them in a "poseur" tire category (for me, at least).

Once I run out of XPCs, I'm only buying BFG ATs for all pavement-biased trucks. FWIW, Leslie, they work great in snow and sand - due to their flat and square profile, they don't sink as quickly as more rounded tires do, and don't dig in as quickly as more aggressive-threaded tires.

for the last 8 years, we've put an average of 40 kmi a year, between 2 or 3 drivers and all vehicles. with an average of 14mpg, and 1.90/gal gas price, it is a little upwards of $5400/year for fuel alone. Buying a "Brand X" tire vs. XPC or BFG A/T will help to save... what, about $300 a year, per given mileage?

I got 80,000 miles out of my XPCs and went nuts trying to find them as they were discontinued.

Luckily I found them at tirerack.com for around $130. The white lettering on their description is a mis-print. They are black sidewalls, I bought them and can vouch for that.

I understand what you are saying and I would never do any real off-roading with Scorpions. Point was that for gp use and on a budget, its an ok tire (not bad in snow). I have XPCs for street use and run Power King bias off road, so I really don't have a dog in this fight, so to speak I rack up big miles (Disco has 264K on it)so I know about operational cost.

I very much understand the budget thing.
but... if I put $.1 for every dollar I've spent on gas in another pocket, I could afford a set of brand new BFG A/Ts every year (almost). or a set of XZLs every 1 1/2.

I got a set of Good-Year Fortera's last year for about $110 bucks a tire, they are really good on road, better than the Michellin's. Off-road they they hold out pretty well. If you want a Michellin XPC I have my spare that has never been used that I could sell you, if you are in need on one!!!!

Jaime, Thanks I called tirerack and they said white letters are a misprint. Ordered 3 and will use my spare.
