Greeting Experts -

I have a 1994 Discovery, 88,300 miles. Check engine light came on, Code 34 (running rich). I already destoyed and replaced a catalytic converter, and would like to avoid that situation again.

Being somewhat mechanical, what can I do to remedy running rich? New plugs were installed about 7 months ago. Layman's terms, please! :-)

Thank you!

Howie:
Start by clearing the codes by disconnecting the serial mating plug so you can see what other codes have been thrown.

You are likely to find either a bad oxygen sensor, one of the temperature sensors, or perhaps a bad Mass Air Flow Sensor.

One of those devices is probably malfunctioning causing the rich run condition.

Paul,
Thank you for your reply. Months ago I had a code
44 (02 sensor), cleared it, and never re-appeared. So now, only the code 34 is showing.

Is there any way of testing/cleaning these items
before plunking down funds for each component? Do you think I should first replace the 02 sensors since that code was thrown?

Many thanks!
Howie

No, I don't think you need to replace your oxygen sensor as it isn't old enough (in most cases to warrant replacement yet). As for cleaning, it depends on what is causign the ECU to think it needs to richen the mixture. If it is a temperature sensor, it will need to be replaced. If it is the MAF, it might be able to be cleaned, but again, I doubt it is the MAF.

Without checking for additional codes, you won't know why it is running rich. The last codes thrown is the one displayed, so it may not be the root cause of the problem.
