I don't really know where this topic fits so thought I'd post it here.

I've been wondering about the non-airbag bumpers like ARB or TJM ones. As far as I can tell, TJM doesn't make an airbag compliant bumper for the D1's so how do insurance companies view them if you get into an accident?? Or I guess I should say, are there any issues insurance-wise putting a non-airbag compliant bumper on a vehicle that has airbags?

I don't know...I'm just speculating here. I think airbags are mandatory for manufactures but I don't think there is a law that says an individual can't remove them or at least dissable them. I could be wrong. I'll check the Massgov website for some quick info.

The airbag sensors are not in the bumper, so if you hit something hard enough, the air bags will go off no matter what kind of bumper you have.

I belive the insurance companies are more concerned with the damage done to what you hit, and if an aftermarket bumper caused more damage than what the stock bumper would have.

Of course if you ram your 2 ton Rover into a Mini at 80mph it doesn't matter what kind of bumper you have, the Mini will loose.

So what exactly is the difference between a nonairbag bumper and an airbag bumper?

Airbag compliant bumpers have been tested to show that the bumper does not change the deployment characteristics of the airbag.

I believe the crush cans are to absorb the energy from an impact, so it doesn't transfer to the occupant.

in theory...they slightly slow the impact rate...lowering the deceleration speed of the vehicle and letting the passive restraint systems do their jobs with less impact on the occupants. some believe that the slight change in putting a non-air bag bumper on an air bag vehicle will skew the puzzle and cause the air bags to deploy too soon or too easily. others think it is a pile of crap.

what your insurance company may think often has no basis in reality anyway, so i don't know how the above info will effect anything...

If you notice the way they word their article, there is no mention of them actually destroying trucks to test bumpers. A source told me that it's too expensive so they use computer programs to come up with the product. So basically it's a bunch of crap since no one knows how they will react untill you rear end or t-bone that Pinto (boom).

Alan, check the archives for similar discussion with a fellow named J Espelien. He had much better than average knowledge of what are the DOT standards for SRS, and repercussions of altering the bumper etc.

The bottom line could be summarized like that -
- with a stock or airbag-compatible aftermarket bumper, a LR's airbag is not likely to go off in a frontal impact at speeds under ~40mph.
- with a non-airbag compatible bumper, this speed lowers to 25-30 mph.

If you ask me, a frontal impact at 30mph is pretty damn strong, and it doesn't happen very often.
